it's a rhetorical strategy. it's supposed to make people impulsively support a position without thinking too carefully about it.
kids are important and obviously deserve protection, yeah? to argue against something that "protects children" seems bad and feels bad; unless, of course, you already know that the person saying "protect kids" is lying or wrong or something similar.
for example, a lot of people are swayed by the phrase "protect trans kids," but not the people who know that transgenderism is uniquely and universally harmful to kids.
