This is still pretty alarming for the superhero genre, and this isn't a triumph for DC.
Fantastic Four, a much less popular IP is going to do roughly similar numbers it looks like, and that's the tired no-hype MCU.

And both of these movies aren't likely to crack just 600 million at the end of the day.
And considering their massive budgets, Hollywood needs to at the least reassess how much they spend on these movies, if not move away from the concept in general.
Though considering how China isn't showing up for any American film, maybe this is about as good as Hollywood can do these days.

Agreed. In the larger context it's underwhelming. Judging it as a movie by itself, it's consistently earning money even on weekdays which these kinds of movies usually don't. MoS had a huge opening weekend followed by huge drop off.

Well the movie is receiving good word a mouth, and people who like superhero movies are really enjoying it.
I saw it twice, and after the second viewing I realized I really loved the film. Granted I'm a huge Superman fan, I actually read comic books even, so that's no surprise.

Man of Steel was really divisive, it had good action, but muddled story-telling and nothing really else going for it. It also was very tonally different from the source material.
Superman 2025 is very in-line with the tone of the character, and has other things going for it other than the action.
It is a good starting place for a new cinematic universe/franchise.

It makes you wonder why they spend so much on these movies, though. When even The Batman doesn't do crazy numbers, how can Hollywood execs justify budgets north of 200 million?

Superman and F4 are not big box office draws. They never have been. I know that's not what Superman fans want to hear but its the sad truth. Gunn knows it and that's why he packed Superman with side characters.
With the amount of excuses he's been making in the press it's clear he expected better but he wasn't expecting Superman to make a billion. The best he could hope for was The Batman numbers he won't even come close with a cornerstone IP.

It is odd, as a Superman fan, to think that the Fantastic Four can make nearly as much money as Superman. Despite Supes obviously being way more famous and popular.
I guess it might be the effects of the MCU, maybe that brand still has enough going on to where minor characters and teams can still make big numbers.

I suppose Captain Marvel did somehow manage to make way more money than Wonder Woman.
So maybe the fame or popularity of the characters really has next to nothing to do with their box office success.

Superman hasn't been a big draw in a while though.
In the 80s and before he was huge because he was the number 1 comic character from the late 30s to the 70s

Come the 70s Marvel started to dominate the business, since they made comics for slightly older children, so naturally all little boys wanted to seem more mature by reading them.
And even on the DC side of things, characters like Batman started to over take Superman, as the audience started to prefer darker stories which Superman didn't excel at.

Come the 2000s, the kids who read comics, and the adults who used to read comics read mainly Batman, Spider-Man, and X-Men, and Superman moreso joined Wonder Woman as a character who was more of an image, name, and brand rather than a genuinely popular character.

Dude, even during his lowest commercial points in the 90s, Superman was still far more popular than the Fantastic 4.
The FF are historically important for being the first real Marvel books (Namor and Captain America were retroactively added in, but the real comic universe started with FF no1) but they were never particularly popular in the grand scheme of superheroes.

Back at their most relevant in the 60s, they were still under books like 'Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane' and Archie.

Being a DC fan and being insecure at being in second place are like peanut butter and chocolate at this point, they go hand-in-hand.
You can tell this because there are many articles, blogs, youtube videos, and forum posts about why 'DC is better than Marvel,' but the opposite, arguing that Marvel is better, basically doesn't exist. They don't need to argue shit, they're already secure.
I say this as a DC fan.

Though, given the good reception of the DCU so far, it is possible that going into the 2030s DC could become the big fish in the quickly dying up pond of superhero movies as the MCU runs out of steam.

I think most hollywood movies will bomb and capeshit is not a guaranteed success anymore, it will be the same as it was in the 2000s but this time way worse because studios keep investing in this cinematic universe bullshit when no one gives a single fuck about that anymore
For the DCU to be an actual thing, Peacemaker season 2 needs to be a GOT level hit, Supergirl needs to do even more or around the same amount as Superman, Clayface shouldn't even be a thing for your "DCU" at all, that's retarded

I think this is dead and if any capeshit will make a billion it'll be Secret Wars and that might truly be the last time it happens, I even doubt Doomsday will get to a billion

I don't know, I think there is an audience out there who wants to see a new continuity build over time, it won't be nearly as big as what Marvel were able to do, but I think you still could build momentum to make even smaller IPs succeed on the big screen.

The main thing, though, is that the budgets need to come down. While it's possible that should the DCU be left to grow, and stays high in quality, that you can get movies to make up to 700 million or so, the average film still won't be able to make a profit if the budget is nearly 200 million or over.

>Clayface shouldn't even be a thing for your "DCU" at all, that's retarded
Clayface and movies of its ilk will what saves DC and keep it going after Marvel sinks for good. Lower mid budget films is what the comic book movie industry needs in a world where overseas box office demand has run dry. Moving into new genres instead of just making superhero films is a great idea. DC Studios being a studio that makes horror and crime movies as well as capeshit will keep it alive. The Penguin was a big success and it wasn't capeshit. Even if Clayface makes 100 million worldwide it'll have doubled its budget.

Not Mario, Minecraft and Barbie. Toy and video game movies are going to kill capeshit and hit that sweetspot for nostalgia while introducing it to a new generation. The DCU and MCU should fear legend of Zelda. That movie is going to kill capeshit hard and go gangbusters.

can't be compared
one is coming off the back of the most beloved cape trilogy of all time
normies still worship TDKR, they think all 3 are perfect movies
touting the hottest guy in cinema at the time brought in women
nirvana meme song and the advertising were carefully planned, remember the months of astroturfing on this very board? somehow riddler was an incel icon even though he had no incel characteristics and was just more of a social recluse
no reason in a filthy town like gotham where superheroes like catwoman are spreading their legs for cash he couldn't get laid, but all the walkup to the movie was BATMAN VERSUS INCEL

by contrast superman had to undo all the hate and vitriol build up by snyder and his obnoxious fanbase inflicted on the public
normies hated the snyder trilogy if they even saw it, and by the end even normies were noticing the social media turfing by indians (remember "watch it seven times for the seven"?)

if superman makes half what bats made I would consider that a smashing success, ignoring the entire climate surrounding the films is asinine, guys who argue like that are so low iq I'm surprised they remember to even take inflation into account

Deranged take.
Sure Iron Man, Ant Man, and Thor may have more temporary name recognition for being recent block-busters, but that doesn't compete to the level of cultural relevance Superman has.
Superman, with 'kryptonite' and to a lesser degree 'fortress of solitude' has transformed the very English language.
If you talk about Iron Man or Thor, there's still a not insignificant chance people will think you mean the Black Sabbath song or the actual mythological figure.

DC is screwed video games-wise because they're owned by WB, who has their own in-house video games division. That division is fucking shit, WB makes terrible games consistently and exclusively. Their last good game was like a decade ago.
But because corporate execs are retarded, they probably won't ever license off their own characters to other, better, video game companies.

Disney, who owns Marvel, has no ties into the video game business, so they just sell off their IPs to studios who mostly do a good job.

And of course the studios learned nothing from the Arkham games and keeps doing grimdark serious Batman only. You don't need to go camp but Batmam works best blending wacky with legitimately creepy and scary. His arch nemesis is a literal evil clown. Ra's Al Ghul regenerates in a pool. You can go dark and edgy but it needs balance with creepy and the wackier elements really help Gotham feel more like a nightmare circus.

MOS was written by Nolan and Goyer and just a refurbished Batman Begins. STAS was made by BTAS guys and Timm has said when he did STAS he didn’t know much about Superman and was more of a Batman guy.

It absolutely does, Donner's Superman was and still is iconic, and the core elements from Superman 1978 should've never been edited out, even Snyder, as shitty as he was, didn't go so far as to make Jor-El a fucking villain. He killed Jimmy Olsen, yes, and made him a CIA operative, but Russel Crowe's Jor-El is still a sympathetic mentor to his son, not a crazed maniac like in Gunn's flick, and is ALMOST (but not quite) as good as Brando's Jor-El.

It won't get $600 million with the $363 million budget and it's a commercial flop. It's not going to sniff the MoS $670 million box office. Redditors and Gunnfags started talking about restoring the brand and the merchandise sales LMFAO.
Gunn made two box office flops with the DC in Suicide Squad 2 and Superman.

Boravia is clearly Russian-coded. Even characters like the Boravian leader and that chick at Luthor's HQ spoke with a strong Russian accent. The architecture of Boravia is also inspired by Russian pre-1917 architecture.

It's strange how the retarded libs and redditors turned on Snyder who is one of the wokest Hollywood filmmakers after the release of Gunn's Superman.
