he only shows up for a stupid tease at the end of the second one, which is a shitty sequel, and that's when you stop watching.

first one is still a good film, and he dies in that.

It actually pisses me off what they did to Barbosa. He was the GOAT pirate. Obviously Jack is the star of the movie, but Barbosa was the quintessential pirate. He represented the heart and soul of pirate culture. At the end of the third movie he proved he was free from all influence and was free to sail and be his own captain. They made a big deal about it. Then in the 4th movie they just yanked it all away and said lol nope, he had a bad battle and works for the crown now. Despite 3 movies of him battling the crown and swearing he’d rather die than serve. I know 4th and 5th sequels are never going to be good, but damn they didn’t even try. They just wrote lazy one offs.

No, see that's my problem with Barbossa. He was just the first mate of the Black Pearl that did a mutiny. But out of nowhere he's like this big important pirate. That shift is way, way out of proportion.

Wasn't him working with the crown some obvious self serving scheme?

We don’t know much about him before the mutiny, it’s not like he was some kid. He was likely already a pretty established pirate that just didn’t have a ship. Also, once he did mutiny, he had the Pearl for likely a few years, and he’s waaaay more aggressive in pirating than Jack so he could build a pretty good reputation fast.

I actually find 5 quite fun.
What the fuck were they thinking with 4?

They shouldn't have made any sequels, it was a perfect story as it was.

>former hardcore man goes soft with age
It happens. You should have known in the second film which took away the entire Pearl's crew edge including Barbossa from murderous pillaging type to misunderstood under(sea)dogs.

The second and third movie refined their motivations and slowed some of their more reckless methods, but not their ruthlessness.
>old man goes soft with age
The worst trope to ever trope. I don’t care if it happens in real life, it’s the worst thing to do to a fictional character. It’s a movie about magic and pirates, you do NOT have to abide by the law of aging men tendencies. Audiences fucking hate seeing their hero beaten and humiliated just for a lazy 120 minute character arch that we’ve already seen. It’s lazy and ruins good IPs. Looking at you Star Wars. And racially why Dead men tell no tales was so trash.

>quintessential pirate
>pirate culture
i know it's a fun fantasy film with pirate characters, but i'm going to believe QI and Horrible Histories that being a pirate was more regimented and strict. you're running a ship. you don't want chaos, even just the crew getting drunk too often.

it all kicks off in Captain Blood because of the "don't rape women" rule, you can do pirates without them being Chaotic Neutral manchildren.

>errmm aktually pirates were NOT fun and drinking rum. They were strict and dedicated. This movie about squid people and magic compasses is inaccurate and misguided. Check my Reddit history, I made a full analysis of all the mistakes, it earned me 3 gold from some kind strangers

>but not their ruthlessness.
Did the Pearl crew execute the first person to answer a door or throw bombs in public spaces with fearful citizens while raiding a town for supplies in the sequels?
Anonymous No.213112252 >>213112340
>>213112185
yeah the magic compass was enough whimsy for me, tbhonest. if Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley had any charisma, they could drop Jack Sparrow completely, just have Barbossa as the eccentric pirate.
maybe my Reddit thesis didn't do THOSE kind of numbers, but i'm still right.

Because they actually had a real mission. The pillaging is their regular fun and money making activity. The whole point of the series is that the big bad India trade company is cracking down. So they had to come together and coordinate to stop them. Also, they were raiding and being reckless because they couldn’t fucking die. They had gone crazy from being undead for a decade. Now they’re mortal and have real issues.

Jack should have stayed dead, going down with the pearl was a kino ending.

Now you’re just talking about making a completely different movie. You just don’t like fantasy. And the whole point of the trilogy IS the magic of sea legends. Also, it’s supposed to be fun with some comedy. Don’t complain about it not being serious enough, just watch some thing else

i do like fantasy. i like the magical treasure, the characters (in the first one) are still REAL people. they're not elves or something. they even get TURNED INTO magic skeletons, that's surprising to them, not just unknown to us.

hard to explain. there's a balance with fantasy (and i hate magic-as-technology) but i mostly mean the characters. their personalities.

It was a cool death, but would have conflicted with the story line already set up.

So no they didn't because they stopped being ruthless. Got it.
>>213112304
I'll agree to that if only because I disliked the Sparrow and Swan aftermath. On the flipside Norrington never should have died and they wasted a great opportunity to have him be the reverse of Barbossa. Having him and Jack would have been great.

Yeah. They didn’t continue to raid and murder carelessly. Because they aren’t IMMORTAL anymore. Once they solved that problem and could now die from minor injuries, they made actual plans and executed carefully thought out plans. Shocker. Almost like growth and character development are cool.

>On 16 December 2018, The New York Times published an interview with Australian actress Yael Stone, who accused Rush of sexual misconduct during the production of a theatre adaptation of Diary of a Madman in 2010 and 2011.[58] Among the allegations Stone made in interviews to the Times and ABC were incidents where Rush angled a hand mirror over a shower cubicle to observe her naked, sent her erotic text messages and danced naked in front of her in her dressing room

That’s the reality of how life works. Absolute nobodies rise to power extremely quickly in real life. Grant was a shopkeeper before the civil war and Hitler was a homeless guy

there's a swordfight on a rolling ferris wheel trundling through the jungle and everyone considers it just perfectly normal and not weird at all. pretending like any person in these movies have a sense of self-preservation is retarded.
