I just watched Sorcerer's Stone for the first time. Pretty damn good for 1/4 a century ago. I happened to read the book right before.

Why did the American publishers change the name from Philosopher's Stone to Sorcerer's Stone? Do they think American children don't understand the word Philosopher?

I didn't mind Emma as Hermione, but Ron is supposed to be tall and gangly, and Harry has jet-black hair, not brown.

I suppose it's harder to film if Ron wasn't lined up with the other 2 in camera. The same with black hair getting lost in frame.

can't fault them for not knowing how the kids would grow up, Rupert Grint was just a ginger 10-year-old.

but why the hell did they effectively write him out of the story? he was basically just there, moaning sometimes.

No, we're not that stupid. I never met an American who doesn't know the P word. J.K. Rowling probably demanded that the books have 2 separate regional names as a prank so rumors would circulate that Americans are too fucking retarded to define Philosopher

100% this. Want to get kids to buy your fun magic book? Switch Philosopher with Sorcerer. Now the consumer knows exactly what it's about.
When I think Philosophers Stone, I think alchemy. There are also legends about it granting immortality, which fits the story, but Sorcerer just makes more sense when the whole series is about wizards at school.

It was Arthur Levine, the publisher who bought the rights for Scholastic.

>The one question I'd like to pose to you right now, Joanne, is how wedded you are to the title. When I edited the first installment of Philip Pullman's trilogy in the U.S. we changed the title to THE GOLDEN COMPASS (it was "Northern Lights" in the U.K.) which had a better reception here. Similarly, I'd like to propose an alternative title for the first Harry Potter in the U.S. I like the sound of HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE, but those who have heard of it so far have found themselves misled into thinking the book will have an obscure, "philosophical" overtone. Chalk it up to idiot Americans, but I think we'd be better off here with a title that was a bit more playful (and easier to design)

>What do you think of HARRY POTTER AND THE SCHOOL OF MAGIC. I think it has a nice ring to it; it evokes all the fun to come at Hogwarts without giving too much away, and it's a bit of a play on the sense of the word "school" (i.e. both an institution of learning, and a... philosophy as it were!)

Another stupid decision. I bet he would try to change the title of the Bible to "Jesus and Friends" or something

The first two books being so short means the adaptations were pretty solid, from book 3 on more and more stuff is cut out because Rowling just kept adding more pointless detail, but movie 3 in general is pretty good and widely considered the peak of the franchise.

Did a lot of kids, British or otherwise, really know about the Philosopher's Stone and its relation to alchemy/the occult/magic? I know Faust is a big deal in early education for Europe, but I would've imagined that the more magical elements would just be glossed over in favor of the theological ones.
