That's what happened to me. Also, I'm not entirely sober. I use cannabis recreationally when I want some sort of a high.

As long as you're still enjoying the drunks just keep drinking. You'll know when you hit your rock bottom and can't take any more. The Cost/Benefit analysis exercise is something you can do on paper to help you see where you are.
My page had a lot of costs and no real benefits. I continued to drink only because I always had and that's what I did with my nights. When it was all blackout and hangover and no good times, I had to hang it up forever.

I can't give that to anyone else; that resolve and finality. I wish I could but everyone needs to find it for themselves. If they can't they may die drinking.

There is no legitimate reason to drink alcohol in modern times. I can understand that when you're a Bronze Age farmer or some 1700's sailor that getting drunk is legit the only thing to lighten the constant boredom, but we live in a wonderland. Boredom is only one symptom of anhedonia, because nothing is worthy of holding their attention due to fried brain receptors. Little pleasure in anything + no interest in anything = depression. Though that's only one reason to turn to substances, which compounds with the economic one you described.

Those older pastimes have nothing on infinite scrolling algorithms specifically tuned to be as addictive as possible, bringing previously unheard of dopamine hits with each swipe. Most people vegetate on their iPhones during every moment of their free time, hooked into TikTok or Xitter like junkies.
Try it yourself. Take a one month internet break and focus on eating better, exercising, reading and staying sober. The difference is night and day.
