The father and son leaving the island to go hunt was the coolest part. I am surprised they didnt cast a daughter character instead.

Yeah, it's excellent. Cure is a bit more of a psychological horror/thriller, Kairo/Pulse leans more supernatural.
The Wailing is also a good Korean film you'll like. A lot of the 90s era j-horrors have that dreamy element to them though so also check out Ringu and Ju-On: The Grudge
Session 9 is a western one in that vein worth a watch.
