Why did Driver bother putting on the mask?

Nobody would recognize him anyway. If anything, a fucking weirdo guy in an obviously fake mask was standing out there, I think that would create a bigger shitstorm.

>Ay yo jewish Tony who da fuck is dat??

If it really was about not getting recognized, why did he wear his scorpion's jacket?

Watch the movie in slow motion if it's too fast for your brain to handle otherwise

He had autism, much like the director. It was his comfort jacket. Refn does something similar with a towel he wears tied around his waist.
The whole movie was a self-insert fantasy.

It's a Slasher homage from Refn and possibly some sort of disassociation/de-personalization technique to become the killer he needs to be. In scenes prior like when he kills the guys in the motel room he is not playing the active role but the reactive role. He's also trembling and sweating bullets in the confrontation with the strip club guy.

More of a serious issue with this film: The Driver falls in love with and simps for a single mother with a non-white husband and child and does his best to make it possible for them to live their life together free of his gang debts. The single mother at an awkward third wheel dinner tells the story about how her baby daddy hooked up with her when she was underage and she made slutty play on word remarks about being a size queen. Why would he do this if he's "literally me"? I would never do this.

oh that's right, this is all rhetorical, I know the answer: it's because Refn is literally a cuckold

Ha. Brutal. I hope Refn sees your comment and realizes how much of an idiot he was. This movie stuff is so obviously bs, its good that we have hard-hitting movie reviewers like you out there keeping everyone accountable.

Nobody saw him looking into the pizza place, the mask was for people who would see him driving nino of the road.

what remarks were those?

It's not a mask, it's his true self.
Like metaphorically, or some such. Like how the real Superman is the character wearing the suit and not that other guy.

The scene encapsulates the essence of the whole film. He wears a mask. He's on the outside, looking in. That's been the guy's whole thing the entire movie and here it's made explicit and literal.

Having a costume means getting into character. Its important to some. Driver is an autist. Having a ritual might be something necessary for his peace of mind. He gets very stressed in other violent situations. He often overkills due to this.

Don't view everything through a lens of tactical realism. You're removing the humanity from the characters.
