its different, american studios used to produce high quality animation with a storyline tailored for americans, with american humor/social issues/pop culture references. sure you can still find high quality anime movies in the modern year but they were made for japanese people. the humor fucking sucks, the tone is completely lost when translated, and the societal differences in world building are prevalent enough to make it harder to get immersed in those films

I don't think animation has been done in Japan for 20 years. It certainly hasn't been good since the move to cg. It is sort of recovering with improvements in drawing tablets but anything good is really an exception.
Children using computers for writing instead of gaining the manual dexterity of writing out heiroglyphs by hand means that their advantage has disappeared and animation will be a lost art.

Early 2000’s anime looks like shit. The colors are muddled and the linework is sloppy. Shading also suffered and continues to suffer. 80’s and 90’s is the sweet spot with hand painted cell art.
