People loved him for his slow mo and girmdark comicbook aesthetics, but even his early work didn't sit well with the critics.
During his DC era, people loved him for man of steel(critics still hated him) but he became controversial with the BvS. The justice league production was turbulent, and Snyder, which the nerd hate was at an all time high at that moment, had to leave because his daughter was dying. TJL turned out to be a flaming turd, but later on, Snyder kept teasing his own extended version of TLJ, which gave him some clout. The Snyder Cut was kino, and it helped Snyder restore his reputation.
Unfortunately, the Snyder Cut made Snyder arrogant and he went on to make self-indulgent bullshit after the Snyder Cut. He also played the "my own unreleased cut is better!" again but with terrible results this time, so people went to hating him again.
