I've never found black American culture in movies entertaining. It looks alien, which, of course, it is. I remember renting this film many moons ago. I hated every minute of it.

This, I watched it recently and thought it felt shoddy and uninspired. Definitely doesn't feel like propaganda to make people want to be black, it feels like a shitty comedy.

I really liked this and do the right thing but at no point does the movie tries to present their live styles as cool or appealing.

This was Cube's project through and through. From coming up with the concept and securing the funding through getting everybody on board (Tucker to star in it, DJ Pooh to co-write the script and help with the OST, Gary Gray to direct when he was just a music video guy etc.) to playing the lead in the movie. Though Cube didn't re-invent the wheel this was probably the first "buddy comedy in the hood" type of movie and it kickstarted many careers. And you didn't have to be black (and thus know real-life equivalents of some stereotypical characters portrayed in the movie) to be able to enjoy it. Shit, not knowing anything about their culture probably doesn't hinder your entertainment at all. The mere absurdity of situations and the visual presentation were enough for most people to have a good time with Friday.
