I know people talk about Basterds as some jewish revenge fantasy, but Django is that and nothing else. It doesn't even have the same memorable scenes and performances as Basterds. In Django, there is no tension, the humor falls flat, and the characters are one-dimensional. The movie is just "ayo fuck white people"

Basterds is more of a revenge fantasy than Django. With Django you have a white hero killing the white villain and a black hero killing the black villain. This is cause Tarantino obviously sympathizes with American white people and wants to make it clear there shouldn't be racial antagonism between whites and blacks. But with Basterds, cause it's a Weinstein flick, every single person who isn't a Kike is either savage, ignorant, or evil. And we're meant to cheer whenever Kikes machine gun or bludgeon or immolate Nazis even if they're just footsoldiers. Landa is evil but has the caveat of being a traitor and even in that regard still gets a comeuppance at the end.

Schultz is "one of the good ones" for blacks in the same way Jackson's character was "one of the good ones" for whites. I understand, but Goggins carries the final act so it ends up being a good film anyway. I like Jackie Brown but only contrarians or Tarantino despisers pick it for their favourite film of his. Kill Bill and Django are utter shit, Basterds and Death Proof are just silly fun, Pulp Fiction and Hateful 8 are good, Reservoir Dogs and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood are masterpieces. Quentin is a good director, but neither an influential one nor one of the best to ever do it.

That's his MO, he's always put over the top villains in his films and IB and Django were just evolutions of his formula. IB isn't a very well written plot, and it's a film that he created around the time of Kill Bill when he wasn't trying to make a "smart" film at all. At the time it was made he was taking a lot of shit in interviews about the extreme violence in his films and IB was intended as a middle finger in the face of his critics. That's it.

You can even see it in Hateful 8 but it's less over the top. Thank god he walked away from a lot of that kind of writing in Once upon a time in Hollywood.
