Yes. Many video rental stores didn't carry outright pornography, and the shame of renting pornography from someone you might later see again was discouraging. Once people had unlimited access to hardcore porn through their monitors, there was no longer any demand for a porn substitute.

The Japanese pink films are the best example of this imo, a lot of them were basically wannabe art directors who got budgets to make a movie as long as it had lots of sex scenes in it.

For me that's a completely different niche. Hardcore porn is just for jerking off and nothing else. Erotic films are horny but also have at least some attempt at aesthetic value and showing something interesting beyond just sex.

With the advent of the internet, softcore movies became redundant as you didn't need to go see something like that at the theater and could beat off in the privacy of ones own home.
