having finished it now, i don't know if it's good. real people don't act like that and these things situations just don't happen in real life. the worst part was when it's revealed that he is actually le wealthy somehow and chooses to clean toilets instead of being chauffeured around like his sister. it's like the whole movie had been a lie from the start until that point. this whole thing just seems like a geriatric old man's idea of the world and excuse to put his favorite boomer music on film. i would also like to point out the suspiciously german looking family randomly existing in Japan, at minute 00:32, could these be mr. Wender's grandchildren?

Going to Japan depressed me because it reminded me of Sweden when I was a kid. So much can change so rapidly. So fucking rapidly.
Anonymous No.213328481 >>213328576 >>213329064
Wim Wenders' romantic Japanophilia. Japanese would never see it this way, but how the guy is downtrodden and exposes issues they need to fix. Or he's a hidden serial killer/rapist/outcast.

welp ok im not watching the movie. what the fucks the point.
also big lebowski type shit when you find out his uncle invented the rubix cube and you find out hes the inheritor. no WONDER he doesnt give a fuck

The ambigious ending saves it from being slop.

i mean wenders made a documentary about ozu, he loved the guy and perfect days is clearly another tribute to him

Him being rich is not really implied in the movie, it's just something Wenders brings up in an interview which is stupid like you said and I choose to ignore

it is clearly shown that his sister is wealthy and she says, in disbelief, "are you really cleaning toilets?"
i think the intention is clear

Or the sister married into wealth, there's more than one way to read that scene

Japan has many people like this. But they are not toilet cleaners. More like this philosophy is in skilled trades and craftsman. Toilet cleaners are all foreign now.

They imply it's inherited and he rejected it.

It's definitely meant to signify to the audience that he chooses to live his life the way he does. He isn't doing it because he couldn't achieve or doesn't have higher means, but because he finds enjoyment in it. Especially since there seems to be some tension between him and his family, even more reason to choose a different path. I don't think it's stupid at all, probably a message more people would benefit from. Money ain't everything, hell, it ain't much at all.

The mc is literally running from his past and hiding from people he knows, including his own family.
There are multiple scenes in the movie where he breaks down in tears because he's unsure he's done the right thing or not... including the aforementioned ambiguous ending.

This is all headcanon. The end is ambiguous, yes, but it could just as easily be interpreted as him being not a "monk", or a "ascended" person that found the true meaning of life and is always happy, but a regular person instead, who will feel negative emotions from time to time. It's not a binary thing, don't understand why almost everyone sees it like that.

It was nominated for an academy award. It stars one of the biggest actors in Japan. It was helmed by one of the great German directors. It made a splash at the festivals. If you're plugged into movies at all, this one was on your radar, bub.
