It's great. Amazing acting, perfect casting, massive tone. I would say that in a vacuum it's easily one of the top 5 shows ever aired on TV, if not top 3.

In a holistic sense though it's deeply stained by what happened to the show in seasons 2-4, so I have no choice but to give it an asterisk.

To just "overdose" from cocaine you'd need to bury your face in a mountain of it and then snort your way out, and then maybe your body would go into some kind of shock

I think so, but I haven't seen the Sopranos. It's probably a good show but I think it appeals more so to Americans and possibly Italians. Mob culture is different across the world whereas True Detective seems more universally relatable.

Sopranos is great but it has no cohesion between episodes, there's no plot aside from a few arcs and every season having a new "villain". It's just meandering depressing vignettes, which are still great but the point is that there's no direction so I don't think it can be the "best show"

I think the single biggest failure of season 2 is not fleshing out Caspre. He's a nobody and the audience is disconnected from the mystery because we don't give a fuck about who Caspre is despite all his loredrops and the big reveal of his kids being behind his death

IMO all of this gave the show such a feeling of being grounded in reality, the pacing felt very true to life where you can't really tell when something big is going to happen and then when it finally does it feels so happenstance

-Falls apart in the second half, and the finale devolves into action schlock. It feels like 2 different shows joined together at the middle.
-2 lead characters behave like school boys with their non stop aggression towards each other. It's really stupid.
-Rust's faux-philosophical dialogue is really juvenile. It's done on purpose for my next point, but it doesn't make it any less cringe to sit through
-Rust's personality does a predictable 180 at the end. Like a first year student wrote it.
-Woody harrelson was the producer and involved directly with casting, and cast himself as a "young buck" who has sex with teenagers constantly. (And yes he had to audition all those girls himself).
