It's just a very basic schmaltzy melodrama, which certainly helped it appeal to such a huge audience but still. Even Griffith himself had done better before, and Intolerance is just such a quantum leap ahead of it that it looks amateurish by comparison. Historically important for sure, and it has its striking moments, but it's not *that* good on its own merits.
