It's a straight and earnest go at adapting the comics. No irony or compromises (besides being a little more coy about violence). Even if the voice acting is hammy and the animation a little limited (partially because of how detailed they made the designs, 1:1 with the comics designs at the time), I respect how ambitious it was for the time period. It's not as slick as Batman TAS, but adapting whole arcs and having episodes be serialized like the first two seasons (3-5 had a lot more episodic stuff) was unheard of in kids cartoons at the time.
X-Men 97 worked well as it was pretty much just a straight continuation with higher end animation, and being free of 90s era censorship (but NOT going edgelord with it, it's still suitable for kids).
