id say the difference between a typical authoritarian regime and 1984 is that the first demands you dig the ditch or you are executed, while the 2nd is a very sophisticated system that only serves to distract, annoy and humiliate the citizens for no real reason other than it pleases the people at the top. the ruling class in 1984 isn't a realistic depiction of north korean leadership, and it's a stretch to call it similar to the soviet union leadership either, but it seems eerily similar in spirit to the incredibly condescending and petty elite of the UK

That's just post war Britain, people already have the image in their minds, so it's not difficult to imagine Britain sliding even further into a hopeless dystopia. The problem was it was enacted by referendum and not voting in politicians in favour of leaving the EU. So we ended up with politicians who disagreed with the result tasked with enacting the result, and as such they didn’t really enact it beyond a few headline grabbing actions.

In my view, the UK is more insidious because it all seems to be done in the name of humiliating the population as much as possible. At least China and NK are simple authoritarian regimes, they just want to quell dissent and maintain existing hierarchies of control.
