I grew up with it, so I was pretty surprised to learn that the comic was nothing like it.

It's an Italian production and Germans love the shit out of Terence Hill and Bud Spencer for some reason
The original Lucky Luke serials are French though I think

strange thing about Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill is that every european nation thinks they are from their european nation

I grew up with Lucky Luke and Terrence Hill movies and liked both, but the Terrence Hill Lucky Luke movie was a disappointment. Like many adaptations in that timeframe.
I learned not too long ago that there was a movie in 2009 that I never heard of, but that I would have loved in the 90s when the TH version came out.
Apparently there was also a Til Schweiger Lucky Luke, but I have not seen it.

Never saw that movie, but the comics are GOAT.

If you like realistic westerns, try the comic books Blueberry and Comanche. Comanche is very good, if a bit lyrical and overromantic, in its own way. Blueberry is similar to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, but with a better plot. The guy who drew the Incal drew Blueberry too (Bluebrrry is better). Tarantino knows about it, he named one of the slaves Blueberry in Django after it.
