Its like when they cast Jarrad Lito in a film. Its to kill a franchise they don't want to make any more film of but do want to still collect revenue from previous films and retain the rights.

Most Waititi or Lito films will look like they should be hits on paper, afterall they cast big names as the directors or stars like those too, right? So when it fails or doesn't even make it to the cinemas they can claim back on insurance. The studios get what they want and it costs them nothing.
