>Once you are able to kill mentally, the physical part will be easy. The difficult part... is learning how to turn it off.

Because he already knew the guy was losing it.

And probably a unhealthy amount of disconnect about training men to kill, when you yourself have never killed.

Cognitive dissonance from knowing that he was part of a machine that broke young men and turned them into killers with a short lifespan

thanks for reminding me about this movie. I don't think it's worth a download but I'm gonna stream it right quick. It's almost like the First Blood when he's evading law enforcement.

the difference is in IQ, for someone with a high IQ who wouldnt ever want to do something like that, you need immense training to take away their "civilisation" take the societal conditioning away from them that makes them productive, law abiding, fearful of imprisonment, etc.
someone with a high IQ is aware of all the terrible things that will happen to them and their victims, thats why they dont commit crime. you have to carefully crack away at this conditioning in a normal human being to make them able to remove their empathy and compartmentalise being able to kill everyone in this combat area i'm suddenly in, and then going back to society where i have to wait in line to order a an overpriced drink.

and tommy lee jones plays his regular cop/fed character, detached from the others. but in this movie he gets his hands dirty a lot and actually fights man to man. it's perfect.

Watched the movie for the first time because of this thread. It was surprisingly bloody. TLJ was involved in a lot more of the action than I thought he was going to be pretty cool. The last 20 minutes felt rushed, but still an alright movie.

No clue if it's real, but it's the move I pull out every time I'm in a paranoid fantasy of being attacked. Just needs some armpit stabs to get all the juicy arteries.

a "campfire" does actually have the potential to get hot enough to make steel malleable. it needs to be really well fed and efficient though, sitting it in the coals of a weak fire would not work.
the fire would need a shape, heat blocking, efficient fuel like thick dry wood.
also his end result would look much rougher and the process would take very long without adequate tools. but it is completely possible and the movie just dumbs it down.

It's more kino for LT to use the (more effective) natural method, attuned to nature, while the Puerto Rican must beat and twist his environment with fire to forge his weapon.

It's to reinforce who the story wants you to believe is the good guy and bad guy at that time. Of course, the truth is more complicated. It's a thing that makes me think writing LT to be more schizoid, autistic, or otherwise neurodivergent could be interesting. The movie suggests he may be a chickenhawk, trying to participate in the military as a civilian. Hannam is a victim of a system in which LT is a willing tool. What if LT simply could not make a living as anything other than an outdoorsman, and then an instructor? Rather than a pure hypocrite, he is one trying to balance his conscience with his career.

LT owed the man $20 from back in the day and the being a tracker doesn't pay well enough to cover the interests.
