Killing someone is a irrevocable act and there are endless examples of the justice system getting things wrong. Imprisoning someone for life has all the same benefits (removing the offender from open society) and none of the downsides (offenders found to be innocent can be released).

Even when someone is sentenced they aren't immediately killed they usually have years before their execution, that's enough time to see if they are innocent.
