Fantastic 4 is an outdated ip that just didnt last as well as Superman or Batman or Spider-Man. It isn't as relevant today and is difficult to adapt to make relevant. The powers are also more visually silly. A stretchy man and a rock man are more difficult to make believable. While a movie like GotG shows silly characters can work, it is more difficult and requires more skill.

And for whatever it's worth, Tony was a decently written character. His quipping style hadn't lost its novelty and he had some edge to him by being a narcissistic man with a messiah/atonement complex

Back in the day they were just as big as Spider-Man or the X-Men. You don't have to take my word for it, just look at how the film rights sold. The MCU didn't have Spider-Man, the X-Men or the FF to begin with because those were the properties studios considered viable and actually bought the rights to. So at the time the FF were considered more marketable than Iron Man or Thor, for example.

The reason there's such a generational gap in FF fandom is Marvel seemingly took exception to how Fox was handling the property and so they just sort of buried the FF in terms of exposure and priority.

Instead of the normal synergy that would come from a property getting multiple big-budget films made from it was nonexistent. The FF were treated like an afterthought after the late 80's or so and aggressively ignored while the movies came out It was almost like they wanted the Fox movies to fail so they could get the rights back, which is exactly the case. But the problem, as they're realizing now, is it's hard to turn the switch back on again.

I hate that the failed movies have convinced people of this. The FF were A-tier MCU characters for decades, had some really awesome runs in the comics and were crucial parts of a bunch of important crossovers. They just have never got a good movie because they were owned by Fox (who eventually even fucked up the X-Men) and Disney (who fuck up everything).

It felt like it was pretty close to being a good movie but just fell short. I can see why it's not performing so well.
The casting was all over the place. The Thing voice acting was truly awful. There's a moment when he finally says It's Clobberin' Time and it's completely falls flat, like the VA was afraid to really let loose and yell.
Reed was mid, mostly on account of Pedro. He just really isn't charismatic. I almost can forgive this one because the focus was on Sue so Reed needed to be in the background. Johnny was solid sometimes, and underwhelming sometimes. Sue ironically was the best casting, Kirby did great.

The main issue is that it felt like they crammed way too much into the movie. It's under 2 hours, and has; F4 new introduction, alternate earth introduction, side-villain introduction, Silver Surfer introduction, F4 baby introduction, Galactus introduction. I mean god damn you put fucking Galactus in the movie and then everything involving him is completely uninteresting. I can't remember another Marvel movie where the final confrontation is as bland and generically boring as this one.

It's as if they had a to-do list from the executives saying "THESE 15 THINGS MUST BE IN THE MCU PRIOR TO DOOMSDAY" and for some reason F4 got loaded with the bulk of it. It's sad too because there's a few really incredible visuals, the space adventures were fun as fuck, and the commitment to the 50s bit must have been fucking painstaking because it was so well done. It actually does a great job of endearing you to the F4 too. They're extremely wholesome and likeable even through the bad casting.

Wasn't anything special. Wasn't anything terrible. I thought Superman was a lot better but I've liked all of Gunn's movies.
