I do appreciate that they didn't try to run away from the cartoonish aspects of One Piece, and they clearly put a lot of care into the sets, especially the Ships
but the whole project feels a little pointless, because there is no chance in hell they'll ever adapt the entire story, and there's no good point along the way to stop the show that would be a satisfying closure point
Marineford is the halfway mark before the timeskip, but that has a total Downer ending and would just leave people blueballed
Also they're going so slowly in filming that the actors are going to start aging out of their roles real fast, and the further the story goes into the Grand Line they actually start running into things that are SO cartoony and crazy that it's nearly impossible to imagine how they will adapt it

How the fuck are they gonna do Skypiea? Impel Down? Thriller Bark? It's not possible

So this show is doomed to end on a cliffhanger, with many characters introduced in Season 1 NEVER EVEN REAPPEARING (like Mihawk, who is not seen again for like 400+ chapters in the manga)

But reality bends over backwards to make sure he doesn't self delete via drowning, he's NOT ALLOWED to die before the last 100~ chapters (once Imu's defeat is set in motion). Fate/destiny is a thing in the series. People can't deny it, Luffy IS the chosen one and has been even "before" he ate the fruit, the fruit LET HIM EAT IT BECAUSE DESTINY. OPs anime is bad. Real bad after a while. It's okay during the first 200~ episodes, but has filler chunks that last 10-20 episodes of a self-contained nothingburger. The pace when it's adapting the real material is 3-4 chapters:1 episode, but around EL (a bit after it swaps from 4:3 cel to 16:9 digital) the pacing goes to complete shit, and never recovers. Filler arcs happen less, so episodes become 1:1 and sometimes have to invent stuff to happen because it's a fight in the manga and that shit takes like 2 minutes of actual screen time. It also exacerbates the mangas REACTION.JPG to the extreme to get padding run time, it also has 7 MINUTES of song + recap and MAYBE 7 minutes of "new content". At one point it got so bad, IT WAS LESS THAN A CHAPTER PER EPISODE.

It's probably about to be completely taken off the air in 6 months time and will finally stop being something that has aired "weekly" for 25~ years, and become a "seasonal" (comes back for 12-26 episodes every 1-2 years). Dunno how hard that's going to hit the bottom line as a franchise/merch source.

Wano had the worst cast bloat we've had so far. It's the arcs real downside. I don't agree with the haters on /a/ where they're foaming at Oden, it's the worldbuilding that actually hurts it (in terms of adding randoms, who do fight, but ultimately they're fodder, and that fodder has to fight other fodder that ALSO needs some minor characterization). The numbers are wasted, the ninjas are wasted, the fucking 5 yakuza factions are wasted, gifters are wasted etc (the gifters themselves are a case of disappointment/contention. They're fake fruit users and are comically fucked up, because fake fruit, so they range from being a complete laughing stock no better than a base fodder, to strong but GIMPED because they have a failed fruit that does less than half the job having a fruit should) It's also foreshadowing for the fact ZOANs have a will of their own, many a smile user who has an animal head, HAS AN OUT OF CONTROL "TWIN", ie ZOANs HAVING A WILL OF THEIR OWN. I think it's kinda of wasted since we were shown this with frankfreed and Mr5's gun-dog zoans with free will, was WELL established for like 20 years, we didn't need the gifters to hammer this home yet again.

On some level it makes sense, Oda is trying to flesh out a civil war, give factions names/leaders/motivations/personality/history etc but in a series THIS LONG when its going to happen at HALF the islands we visit, it becomes too much, as these characters are nothingburgers once we leave the locale. They might get a couple panels to show they're helping during 'the final war', but that's it, they're strong-ish goons that have a few lines, not world shakers.
