I think this has its origins in the mid-20th century, when television was attempting to copy the cinematic format. Studios at the time noticed this and started creating new technologies that couldn't be accurately replicated by the TV sets of the time. That's how you end up with technicolor and very wide resolutions. Also, funny that you use a Chloë pic since she's in quite a few 'lo-fi' Dogme and Dogme-adjacent flicks lol.

To answer QOTD it probably has to do with the inherent cost and risk associated with making films. Many more people have to truly believe in a filmmakers vision in order to properly perform and pull it off. Whereas Mac Demarco didn’t have to listen nor contend with other musicians thinking that recording rock and roll night club on a 4 track cassette recorder made the album worse or less appealing. Basically if you need a cast and they show up to shoot and they see some autist wielding a vhs camera a lot of those people are going to wonder what kind of clownshow joke they signed up for and lose confidence in the quality of the finished product.

I believe too that for a long time children under 16 were more or less prohibited from watching films - imagine being a writer growing up not reading books, or a musician who hadn't listened to albums during their formative years.

Television is also why movies started getting more extreme. At least in the Queen’s country. When the BBFC introduced the X rating to try and moral cuck the cinemas, making you need a loicense proving you were over 16 to get in to certain movies, it had the opposite effect; studios just started intentionally trying to gun for the X rating so they wouldn’t have to make family friendly stuff, which finally give people a reason to go to the theatres. Which I guess is why Hammer horror movies also double as titty movies.

I remember seeing Fire Walk with Me on Criterion Blu-ray and thinking this is the best looking movie I’ve ever seen on my TV. I don’t know how the upcoming 4K release could possibly look significantly better. For some movies, 4K just seem like diminishing returns. I definitely couldn’t care less about seeing Full Metal Jacket on 4K or even on blu ray. I never upgraded from the DVD. It’s the opposite case for 2001, of course, where you go on seeing new details forever. I don’t really care about seeing the skid marks inside the toilet when Pvt. Pyle blows Hartman away. Do some people really get 4K for every movie they buy? I mostly get things I already saw and know I’m going to watch 5 more times.

Outstanding question of the day. I thought about it while showering, and I believe it could have something to do with how the respective medias are consumed.
Most people don't really take audio fidelity into consideration, since high end audio equipment is out of reach for the average consumer. They simply enjoy their tunes with low end consumer equipment that would not benefit from high fidelity audio files. That's not to say niche high end stuff like DSD, electrostatic headphones, or some autistic platter spinners aren't a market, but they're for a marginal group of ballers.
Cinema on the other hand is experienced on the same equipment by everyone sitting in a given audience. Most consumers can afford a movie ticket every once in a while and enjoy a memorable high fidelity experience. It's beneficial to more consumers for a film to be designed with high fidelity in mind. Everyone gets the same experience more or less, so the bar is set pretty high.
This of course is not taking film streaming into consideration, but let me make my own rules to make my argument more valid.
Does this make any sense? I'm still a bit cranky from being woken up by loud noises.
