The casualties on Omaha Beach were not even that high. Allies lost almost nothing on D-Day. You'd have to have like 10 D-Days added together to get one Stalingrad.

I still think the men should have had a mobile shield to deploy with. Perhaps something heavy that the front three men carried. I know they tossed those ideas around, wonder why they decided against it. Speed up the beach is my guess, idk.

They didn't want the soldiers to just sit in the boats behind cover, they needed them to storm the beach. If anything, they probably wanted to install some type of bulldozer dumping method so they'd all be forced out.
