Why did Stannis, the greatest military commander in Westeros, send his calvary charging into a forest?

The real question is, why did D&D hate Stannis so much? We were robbed of this kino

That's against the wildlings. He won that battle. It's when he tries storming a castle with no siege equipment that he loses.

It's funny how almost all of the battles in S1 and S2 carried more weight despite being done almost entirely offscreen. The tactics, logistics, and grand strategies of the battles were discussed and you got a real sense that realistic things were happening even though only the preludes and aftermaths were portrayed. When they finally did a big onscreen spectacle for Blackwater, it was done quite competently.

Everything afterwards when D&D departed from the books just shows that the two had learned literally nothing about the source material. Big waves of soldiers just crash into each other.

My biggest gripe with the show is how the fantastical elements were taken out. I would have loved to have seen more fantasy knight armors
