I think the catalogue of ships is VERY based because it feels like a strange survival of something older. There's no way the poet had firsthand, accurate knowledge of all those obscure Greek towns, yet the list reads exactly like the economic records found in the Linear B tablets from Mycenaean palaces. That chapter might be a real clue that whoever wrote it still understood Linear B, and repurposed information from those Bronze Age bookkeeping archives into epic form.
