This happens in every line of work.
It's also one of the chief reasons Star Trek is terrible when in the wrong hands -- you get some asshole who feels the need to justify his salary as creative lead, or project director, or whatever, and they start "subverting expectations" and changing up core values of the franchise in an effort to win laurels for themselves and advance their careers.
They don't want a Star Trek show to be successful because it's Star Trek, they want it to be successful because of them and their unique ideas, so they can market themselves for more work.
