It's popular in the West, sure. But the people in the general were trying to paint a weird narrative about how real Japanese love the show and second gen Asian Americans hate it. This is despite the fact that the failure of the novel and original miniseries (and now the new one) to garner any audience in Japan have been well accepted and studied facts for decades.

I dont see why it would be? Itd be like a jap making a movie about medieval knights or vikings and a japanese peasant fisherman washes up on their shore and learns the ways of Odin or Jesus. They would probably fuck up nearly every aspect because its our history. Id still watch it but I doubt a general audience would be enthralled.

What is your source on this, my man? The new one had a middling reception in Japan and a lot of critics had severe issues with how incredibly dour it was. Japanese do not like the Game of Thrones style dark storytelling (at least, mainstream audiences do not)

What do you mean, its Shogun. Shogun, the story of a feminist screed regarding how hard it was for women in super-unwoke feudal Japan. I think this was the best version of that story. Japan creary has wery wery evrul cutra.

I think that the 1980 version was received by Japan because it wasn't better than the average japanese Jidaigeki.

But it was a brave attempt.

The 2024 version of Shogun made good choices, Hiroyuki Sanada was the one who helped Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks ( also cast and crew).

It has changes that are good, but I'm still baffled by relegating Blackthorne to such weird position, I know that they wanted to avoid the white Savior trope, but William Adams was a capable man who lived an extraordinary life.
