The Rey experiment didn't work. The higher ups at Lucasfilm need to swallow the bitter pill and admit it to themselves, it won't work and you cannot force audiences to accept her.

Even decades after the OT, you could stop a random person on the street to show them a picture of Mark Hamill and they'd say "hey that's Luke the jedi!"

Meanwhile Rey is the hero of an entire trilogy of Star Wars movies with each earning billions in ticket sales a few years back, yet to most modern moviegoers she's irrelevant. A stranger. About as relevant to moviegoers as some side character in a capeshit movie with 4 minutes of screentime. Her own villains and side characters are more interesting to viewers. Hell, she's so irrelevant that people care more about spin-off characters like Mando or the ginger guy from the games than they do about Rey the hero of a whole mainline trilogy.

What they want to happen is for Rey to have the same kind of audience redemption arc that Anakin had.

The problem is that they think the reason why people started to like Anakin was just because of Clone Wars. And while that is true another aspect is that Anakin does have an interesting story, it was just poorly told during the prequels. And of course after he becomes Vader his story continues and expands.

Rey as a character has nothing going for her in that regard. Whatever backstory you could pull from is completely non-existent. She overcame literally every challenge ever thrown her way with little issue. And she sacrificed nothing to get there.

People mocked the "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" scene in Revenge of the Sith for being incredibly goofy but the underlying feeling there is understandable. Darth Vader sacrificed everything to save Padme and in the end she died anyway and now he's trapped in mostly robotic body.

Compare that to Rey and the closest she comes to having anything like that happen to her is when she blows up the ship with Lightning. But instead of actually killing Chewie the story just goes "oh don't worry, that was a different ship", completely kneecapping that moment for any emotional value.

They treated Rey too perfectly. She is so completely without flaws that her story is BORING. Even when told perfectly the core story is one of someone getting everything she wants without any sort of complications.

Also wanna talk about boring, she doesn't even have any memorable lines or moments.

I think part of it stems from the fact that the Prequels are a partial deconstruction of the popular image of Darth Vader as this stoic badass that was prevalent in the 80s and 90s and still is present now to a lesser extent (people seem to more readily identify with him than they do Luke, even though he's the bad guy). I think Lucas felt that people were missing the point of him and tried to correct it, only to wind up overdoing it.

Different anon here. I don't know about royalties, but George Lucas briefly mentioned putting specific clauses in the deal when selling it to Disney. It was a way to protect his older movies.
