In the cultural zeitgeist when people praise Dawn of the Dead they are really praising Romero more generally, or Night of the Living Dead/Day of the Dead more specifically.

When people think of the romero films all the scenes they think of are from those two and not the exploitation movie that is Dawn of the Dead.

Sorry but this is wrong and another case of anon projecting a modern lens onto the movie. The most iconic/memorable scenes in Dawn were the exploitation scenes like the zombie child killing scenes, the head explosion. This is obviously apparent to anyone because the remake tried to outdo it with the zombie baby

That's how you do horror. That's how you send people home pissing their pants at the thought of sprinting zombies. That's how you give people nightmares. The intro with all the news footage and johnny cash's the man comes around was also great. What a movie.

>actual character development
>showing a failed military response (although the remakes opening is also kino)
>the kino scenes of the three mcs laughing and running amok through the shopping mall on a trolley
>better cinematography and no shaky cam
That's just off the top of my head. I haven't watched it in years, I'm sure if I put it on today I could list another dozen things it does better. It's a great movie. I suppose because, back then, there was nothing else really like it? Kind of like why Star Wars was so popular. You have to remember how limited peoples options were back then, and most people only ever saw what was showing at their local cinema or on TV at home. VHS tapes were basically brand new, and expensive, technology when Dawn of the Dead was released too. Movies weren't "content" yet like today where you have endless options.

To add to what >>213417153 said, Simon Pegg said that both he and Edgar Wright playing Resident Evil 2 during the production of Spaced is what directly led to the creation of Shaun of the Dead, and Alex Garland also directly credits Resident Evil for the inspiration for some of his writing in 28 Days Later. One thing he specifically mentions is writing the infected to run rather than the zombies that were typically slow shamblers in those days because of how panic-inducing he found the fast dogs in Resident Evil.

>Romero himself said that the popularity of Resident Evil (the PS1 video games) is what reignited interest in zombies again.
While that is true, it is worth noting that the film industry taking a chance on zombie films is directly tied to the 2002 film and its sequels. IN the film industry everyone thought the idea of an RE movie was daft, especially one with a 33 million dollar budget. But the film was a hit, and its sequel was a hit, and the third film was a hit, and the fourth film made 2x more than the third film. The rest is history.

There's always this strange effort by some people to downplay the impact the Resident Evil films had on the zombie genre from a business and economic and artistic standpoint. The RE film took the classic Romero zombie and made it scary/creepy again. Snarling instead of moaning was one key change.

In fact the best thing Snyder's does is actively try to be completely different. Trying to do an actual remake would be a disaster.

The RE1 intro is HEAVILY inspired by Monster Dog. You might argue that the foggy mansion surrounded by pissed off dogs came from that movie too. The ambient dog howling sounds you hear in outdoor areas were either sampled directly from the movie or came from the same library. You can hear them in the trailer.
