Why did Lynch have to finish it all on such a dark note after doing so already at the end of S2? I didn't like how S3 ended or the hopelessness it left me feeling.

I think the ending of The Return is supposed to be happy? Judy is destroyed, but Coop is trapped in an alternate timeline, or some shit like that.
