The Conversation (1974).

On that topic, for anyone who's seen it, was your interpretation that the whole conversation was staged and they knew or at least suspected that they were being surveilled? Was the plan that they would make the executive suspect cheating to lure him into that hotel room to murder him? Or did the executive suspect something on his own accord, ask Harrison Ford to hire Caul, and Ford complied even though he was working with the murdering couple all along?

Probably not exactly what you're thinking, but my mind goes to William Castle:
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0145336/

The master of cheap thrills, the guy made a series of moderately successful films which often included some kind of gimmick. Examples:
> A nurse on staff during the showing in case you have a heart attack from fright
> buzzers under the seat to zap people at key moments of the film
> the right to walk out of the movie and receive a refund if you're too scared. All you have to do is wait in line under the big banner that says "cowards corner"

But then somehow he got ownership of the rights to Rosemary's Baby. He didn't direct, but he produced and made a large amount of money

What about Kiyoshi Kurosawa? He had been mainly directing low-budget exploitation flicks for 15 or so years, and then Cure happened.
What's the first notable Ford flick, Stagecoach? That was '39, he had already been working for well over 20 years at that point, but I don't know much about his early career.
Haneke probably counts. I'm not too familiar with his pre-90s TV films, but he doesn't seem too proud of them.

The Brown Bunny was good. I don't remember it having a lot of dialogue, but I knew exactly what Bud was thinking whenever he wasn't talking. Gallo does a good job at accomplishing that. For example, the symbolism was easy enough to catch. I think the brown bunny represents short-lived love (pet store scene where Bud asks about how long bunnies live) and abandonment (Daisy's bunny was left at her parents house). And of course all of Bud's love interests being named after flowers and reminding him of Daisy. Bud is cowardly which becomes very clear by the final reveal at the ending of the film. He quickly abandons everyone and self-alienates. I also like how Gallo depicts America. It's all very banal (suburban America and those long driving scenes). Even the serene salt flats are cripplingly lonely. All of the driving is escapism. Bud sinks lower and lower in his self-esteem. He had a chance with that girl Violet, but he unexpectedly drove off. Next, he just snogged a random hag without saying anything and left. Then, he was with a prostitute but just bought her fast food and dropped her off. Finally, he sank into a sexual fantasy but was confronted with his guilt the whole time. It doesn't glamorize anything sexual. The sex scene was just uncomfortable and sad.

I finished watching Pola X right before I made my post, so I haven't had a lot of time to ruminate on it. I think of that scene where Pierre is talking to his publisher(?), and he's told that his charm in writing is his immaturity and is dissuaded to write a more mature work. Pierre is self-destructive in a selfish way, creating hard times in order to rise above them and get material for his writing. I guess he resents his fairy tale life having a beautiful fiancee that he grew up with and living with no troubles in his mother's estate being a famous but pseudonymous writer. He destroys his own life and tragedy follows to those around him. Overall, I liked the film. I'd like to discuss more about the films if anyone has anything else to add. I'm a newfag to /film/, and these were on one of the charts, so I watched them today. I already watched Gallo's other film Buffalo 66 not too long ago. If anyone has any more recommendations I would appreciate them.

Well if you live in a settler colonial society like me it's pretty interesting. I'm sure a similar story happened not far from where I live as a resident of a colony mainly devoted to agriculture. The Main road near my house is named after a Portuguese man who ran a gum digging camp. Don't beat yourself up buster. The ability to articulate why you liked or disliked a film is something that develops over time. Good composition or lighting is something that strikes you. Something that stands out and makes you feel pleasant. On the other hand, something that doesn't stand out is also a good composition since it doesn't break your immersion from the film.
If you want to learn about narrative, learn about screenwriting. Years ago I watched a basic screenwriting course which helped me nootice patterns in narratives. The screenplay is the foundation for any film. Everything you see and hear is interpretation of the screenplay.

Read. You can pirate books written by critics and film theorists - Ebert's "Great Films" book is very surface level and some of his opinions are cringe-inducing, but it's a good introduction because of its format of short, descriptive, informative essays. A very important thing you should understand early on is that you don't have to agree with critics or reviewers, and that writings with opinions contrarian to yours can still be very interesting and insightful. Another excellent option is IMDB's "critic reviews" function that leads to collections of external essays by professional critics, quick reviews from decades old gazettes, articles by film enthusiasts. It's a treasure trove.

The music fan knows nor cares nothing of time signatures and tritones,
The literature fan has no interest in composition,
Yet the film fan is compelled to dissect his art form of choice. Why is this? We all feel the inclination. 99% of people who read a book on screenwriting have no intention of writing a screenplay. Indeed! It must be that voyeurism again. The desire to see through the matrix pushes us all. The noble idiot who invariably reaches the same maxim every time: “I liked it so it was good / I disliked it so it was bad” — this fool on the hill, who watches 4 movies a year, has a clarity and conciseness of thought that I will never reach.

This is true. Most people might have one thing that they possess a “deep” knowledge of. My brain personally will not allow me to avoid hyperfixating on whatever thing it is this month that I’ve determined to go all in on. I also have maladaptively day dreamt since I was a child and still do it to this day. From my own personal experience in small town USA maybe 25% of the people here operate mentally at the same speed that I do and I can tell almost immediately in conversation whether they are or not. I’m sure in population centers where businesses are headquartered and intellectual/creative types gather the ratio is probably much closer to 50/50. I dont think of myself as very intelligent hence why I use mental speed as the reference.

Not sure how true this is desu. Those music theory youtubers like Adam Neely, David Bennett and Rick Beato regularly get millions of views so obviously there's a lot of people who care about that stuff. I'm sure the average self-proclaimed music fan should be able to tell you whether a song is in triple time or common time at least. It's intuitively applying theoretical practices that are unknown to you but accomplishable and learnable via mimicry of someone who does know. There's that one story of Miles Davis being like Jimi do [theoretical construct] and Jimi was like, what are you talking about, what even is that. And Miles was like man you really know zero theory wtf, and demonstrated what he was talking about on an instrument. And Jimi was like oh THAT thingy yeah I can do that. That it is in fact depraved is precisely what is at issue. The point, which you have failed to address, is that your characterisation of that webm as "lewd and vice-filled" based (supposedly) on the presence of a dog and the shorts worn by the woman who is simply walking to enter a house is seriously wanting and says at least as much about you being vice-filled as it does about the webm.

I'm sorry, I find that incredibly rich given that you have sidestepped to some degree both of my main points about your criticism of the webm. I'm assuming you'd lean into the dog thing hard if you had some kind of evidence that women having sex with dogs was widespread and widely-known enough for your inference to be innocent and not merely a sign of your exposure to the more sordid variety of internet misogyny. Similarly, while you concede that your own temptable nature is part of the question, you arbitrarily maintain that the onus is on the webm which you clicked on in spite of the context making it rather clear that it was about a woman's physical attractiveness, and that it was more reasonable to moralise about the conduct of the poster than to pluck out your proverbial eye.

i am a patient man wiho is willing to entertain the wile youth of anon, however, your retort compartmentalizes the issue, while at the same time, arguing that it is i who ignores the contextual matter. it is not so, i have provided you with honesty and have received unjust and unkind responses. for example, the many points of interests provided therebefore include no logical contradictions but the findings of someone who has sought the truth of the issue. the same can't be stated about your position, who time after time, weavels away from the arbiter of truth by ignoring reason and logic. i have not limited the focus of my arguement to the webm, for instance. notably, it is you who has hyperfocused on the sharing of the item in question. it is you deviating responsiblity for the sharing of materials that have hitherto provoked this dialogue. if we are to maintain that something is wrong with the sharing of a woman with high-toned buttcheeks, who is alone with a dog, then, is it not natural within my own argument to want a hault to material capturing such debauchery from being publicized? what better approach is there then to dissect the belief system of those that share the material online?

No. Even taking it for granted that the webm is objectionable (which I don't), it makes no sense to watch it knowing that it is objectionable and then complain in a place like this. It makes far more sense, to simply ignore it, and conduct your battle against vice in a more efficacious way elsewhere.
