The Conversation (1974).
On that topic, for anyone who's seen it, was your interpretation that the whole conversation was staged and they knew or at least suspected that they were being surveilled? Was the plan that they would make the executive suspect cheating to lure him into that hotel room to murder him? Or did the executive suspect something on his own accord, ask Harrison Ford to hire Caul, and Ford complied even though he was working with the murdering couple all along?

>>213421861The Brown Bunny was good. I don't remember it having a lot of dialogue, but I knew exactly what Bud was thinking whenever he wasn't talking. Gallo does a good job at accomplishing that. For example, the symbolism was easy enough to catch. I think the brown bunny represents short-lived love (pet store scene where Bud asks about how long bunnies live) and abandonment (Daisy's bunny was left at her parents house). And of course all of Bud's love interests being named after flowers and reminding him of Daisy. Bud is cowardly which becomes very clear by the final reveal at the ending of the film. He quickly abandons everyone and self-alienates. I also like how Gallo depicts America. It's all very banal (suburban America and those long driving scenes). Even the serene salt flats are cripplingly lonely. All of the driving is escapism. Bud sinks lower and lower in his self-esteem. He had a chance with that girl Violet, but he unexpectedly drove off. Next, he just snogged a random hag without saying anything and left. Then, he was with a prostitute but just bought her fast food and dropped her off. Finally, he sank into a sexual fantasy but was confronted with his guilt the whole time. It doesn't glamorize anything sexual. The sex scene was just uncomfortable and sad.

>>213421861>>213423214I finished watching Pola X right before I made my post, so I haven't had a lot of time to ruminate on it. I think of that scene where Pierre is talking to his publisher(?), and he's told that his charm in writing is his immaturity and is dissuaded to write a more mature work. Pierre is self-destructive in a selfish way, creating hard times in order to rise above them and get material for his writing. I guess he resents his fairy tale life having a beautiful fiancee that he grew up with and living with no troubles in his mother's estate being a famous but pseudonymous writer. He destroys his own life and tragedy follows to those around him. Overall, I liked the film. I'd like to discuss more about the films if anyone has anything else to add. I'm a newfag to /film/, and these were on one of the charts, so I watched them today. I already watched Gallo's other film Buffalo 66 not too long ago. I went and saw Kelly Reichardt's new film The Mastermind at my local film festival. I've previously seen her films Night Moves, Certain Women, and First cow and this had a similarly beguiling slow energy. It's a movie about a stupid guy who completely fucks up his life for no real reason.

I'm sure a similar story happened not far from where I live as a resident of a colony mainly devoted to agriculture. The Main road near my house is named after a Portuguese man who ran a gum digging camp. I once heard that that living in a settler colony and learning what all the street names mean feels like putting on the glasses from "They Live."

I just...i just don't like /film/ any more.
>watch film
>I can only tell whether I liked it or not
How can I form more nuanced opinions on films? I try to actively watch them, but I don't really know what to look for. I don't even know what makes for good composition or lighting and have no idea about what makes good narrative. Is there any recommended literature about film I should read?
Also, sorry for the off-topic post, but this is the only Sweeney-less, capeshit-less thread in the board.
>>213429268Just watch Sarah Gadon kinos
>>213429268lol no your way of consuming film is perfectly fine and you should keep it that way. don't go down that oversocialization rabbithole.
>>213429214whatever i just remembered i have all the "road to" movies on my watchlist.
>>213429268Why would you need to learn about composition and lighting unless you are a camera operator? It doesn’t matter. No one in /film/ talks about these things. We just like or don’t like, ourselves.
>>213429268Don't beat yourself up buster. The ability to articulate why you liked or disliked a film is something that develops over time. Good composition or lighting is something that strikes you. Something that stands out and makes you feel pleasant. On the other hand, something that doesn't stand out is also a good composition since it doesn't break your immersion from the film.
If you want to learn about narrative, learn about screenwriting. Years ago I watched a basic screenwriting course which helped me nootice patterns in narratives. The screenplay is the foundation for any film. Everything you see and hear is interpretation of the screenplay.
>>213429268Read. You can pirate books written by critics and film theorists - Ebert's "Great Films" book is very surface level and some of his opinions are cringe-inducing, but it's a good introduction because of its format of short, descriptive, informative essays. A very important thing you should understand early on is that you don't have to agree with critics or reviewers, and that writings with opinions contrarian to yours can still be very interesting and insightful. Another excellent option is IMDB's "critic reviews" function that leads to collections of external essays by professional critics, quick reviews from decades old gazettes, articles by film enthusiasts. It's a treasure trove.
>>213429456Canadian actress Sarah Gadon once won a competition for a 10 week screenwriting residency at the Toronto International Film Festival which she used to write her first screenplay, which she will eventually direct herself.
>>213429336Who says we don't?
We’re all saying we don’t here.
>>213429313>>213429336>>213429456I just find it frustrating not being able to articulate what makes a great film great. I feel a bit childish when all I can say after watching a movie is "oh, that was nice!"

>>213429481Thanks a lot, anon. I'll check those out
The music fan knows nor cares nothing of time signatures and tritones,
The literature fan has no interest in composition,
Yet the film fan is compelled to dissect his art form of choice. Why is this? We all feel the inclination. 99% of people who read a book on screenwriting have no intention of writing a screenplay. Indeed! It must be that voyeurism again. The desire to see through the matrix pushes us all. The noble idiot who invariably reaches the same maxim every time: “I liked it so it was good / I disliked it so it was bad” — this fool on the hill, who watches 4 movies a year, has a clarity and conciseness of thought that I will never reach.

PS. I'm a music fan into theory, but I still like something if it just sounds good. I guess I just innately like recognizing patterns.
>>213430013may i suggest that not all music and literature require much of the individual and that not all individuals approach their subjects in the same way, and yet there are plenty of material within music and literature that do require much, but perhaps not all in the same way, just as there are plenty of individuals that lack that oft sought traits that make an individual who he is.
>>213430194may i suggest that pattern recognition is a fine trait to have and that without it you wouldnt be able to call yourself human, however, if that is all you depend on when listening to music a computer or robot would be a more apt description
>>213430042And you'd be right to.
may i suggest that bigger than life is flexner's report incarnate and that movies like it have done great harm to the welfare of human endeavors except in the case of the oligarchal elite whose industry and political capture has wrought great woe upon us
>>213430194This is true. Most people might have one thing that they possess a “deep” knowledge of. My brain personally will not allow me to avoid hyperfixating on whatever thing it is this month that I’ve determined to go all in on. I also have maladaptively day dreamt since I was a child and still do it to this day. From my own personal experience in small town USA maybe 25% of the people here operate mentally at the same speed that I do and I can tell almost immediately in conversation whether they are or not. I’m sure in population centers where businesses are headquartered and intellectual/creative types gather the ratio is probably much closer to 50/50. I dont think of myself as very intelligent hence why I use mental speed as the reference.

>>213430194With music I had to put my foot down and say, “No autism! No theory!” I just learn songs by ear and play them that way. I have a habit of making all my hobbies terribly exhausting. I have books on cinematography, editing, screenwriting, chess, art, whatever. I have a terminal addiction to gitting gud. Music is the last refuge of my joyous cluelessness.
>>213430013>The music fan knows nor cares nothing of time signatures and tritones. The literature fan has no interest in composition. Yet the film fan is compelled to dissect his art form of choice. Not sure how true this is desu. Those music theory youtubers like Adam Neely, David Bennett and Rick Beato regularly get millions of views so obviously there's a lot of people who care about that stuff. I'm sure the average self-proclaimed music fan should be able to tell you whether a song is in triple time or common time at least. You're probably overestimating how much most "film buffs" know about filmmaking too.

Yeast was a funny ant-mumblecore or post-mumblecore or whatever you wanna call it thing but now Mary Bronstein just made some generic le anixety A24 slop with Conan O' Brien and A$AP Rocky lol. Also this is the second movie with A$AP Rocky A24 is distributing this year which is funny. I guess Rose Byrne's perfomance looks good, maybe that Silver Bear was deserved. Idk if this is worth watching just for that, seems too predictable.

Similarly, while you concede that your own temptable nature is part of the question, you arbitrarily maintain that the onus is on the webm which you clicked on in spite of the context making it rather clear that it was about a woman's physical attractiveness, and that it was more reasonable to moralise about the conduct of the poster than to pluck out your proverbial eye.
