>In preparation for his role as โ€œBill the Butcherโ€ in Gangs of New York (2002), Daniel Day-Lewis would often pick fights with strangers on the streets of Rome where the movie was filmed. The method acting, Day-Lewis said was โ€œnot so good for my physical or mental healthโ€

>When Daniel Day-Lewis auditioned for the role of Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York (2002), he only had $11 dollars to his name. When the cast got their paychecks, the first thing that Cameron Diaz bought was a car. Daniel Day-Lewis bought a hot dinner.

>Is this movie realistic
not entirely
>did they actually pick retarded names and fight in the streets?
yes but it wasn't quite as weird and fever-dreamy as the movie presents it. and huge fights like at the beginning and end didn't happen, they were mostly just like a dozen guys vs another dozen guys at most. and most violence was big numbers jumping smaller numbers just like today.

>Daniel Day-Lewis, the acclaimed actor, spent time learning shoemaking in Florence, Italy, after starring in "The Boxer" in 1997. He apprenticed with master shoemaker Stefano Bemer for about ten months, immersing himself in the craft of making custom leather shoes. This was a genuine passion for him, not a role-related endeavor.
