everyone always points to these movies as a reference to good quality animation. But that's kinda cheating right? The animators are just copying the background, there's no real animation being made by the animators themselves

This is a strong contender for the worst movie ever made, it started the plague of Disney live-action remakes.
I still think The Force Awakens, another Disney movie, is worse overall, but Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is certainly not far behind it.

I used to work with a guy who was obsessed with Lewis Carroll stuff. When the office hired a woman named Alice, he lost it. She actually went out with him once right after she broke up with her boyfriend, but she shortly went back to her boyfriend and they got engaged. Guy freaked out and stalked them.

Nightmare Before Christmas is the only standout and 90% of that is Danny Elfman's score.
Edward Scissorhands is just ok, too surreal and absurd for me to get invested.

For me it's not even the aesthetic so much as the plot...in that there is a plot. Lewis Carroll's story is delightful nonsense with no real stakes, just a series of absurd sequences in a little girl's dream. The Burton movie tries to make it this epic fantasy where Alice actually has to put on armor, slay the Jabberwocky, and lead the revolution against the Red Queen.

>the plague of Disney live-action remakes
I agree they were a terrible idea in terms of art/quality. But they made $ at the box office so that's all the Mouse really cared about. Cinderella is the only one I think you can even justify making since the original animated version is pretty lightweight in terms of story and character. Plus the cast was stellar - Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter. But don't get me started on Maleficent! The pitch meeting must have included something like "let's ruin our best villain by giving her a sympathetic back story". Garbage.

The ball sequence is a total standout out, not just for plot (though it is that) but that set is great. So glad Bronaugh built a physical set and didn't just green screen the whole thing. That's one of many reasons I hated the Beauty and the Beast live action remake - I never for once felt like I was in an enchanted castle. Just a mostly empty soundstage with a few props for reference.

>there's no real animation being made by the animators themselves
Every professional artist uses references. The better you become at art, more you realize how your memory alone is not enough to capture all the tiny details of the real world. And animators realize a professional actor or a gymnast knows how to do much cooler looking body language than what a beer-bellied animator sitting on his chair could come up with.

Animators use multiple references at once. They have the live reel footage to use as reference for the motion, the way the clothes move, body language and facial expressions. Then they have the character sheet right next to them to make sure the character looks the same at all times even when its originally drawn and stylized by a some other artist. Finally they have their key drawings as constant reference for the drawings in the middle.
So while animator is drawing he's also simultaneously looking at the live reel of an actress dancing around in a dress, the character sheet of the animated character and both the drawing before and after the current one.
