AJ could have made it if he understood how low the bar was. Tony wasn't particularly cunning or tough, he was just some fat retard who got his position thanks to his father, who wasn't that special, either. He was always helped along by better people like Junior, Hesh, Paulie, and Silvio his whole life. I don't think Tony ever did anything of note, ever.
AJ was equally as unremarkable as his father, but his father was even more influential, so his chances were even better. But he failed to capitalize because he fell for Tony's reputation and thought he couldn't measure up. Even though there wasn't much to measure up to in the first place.
