In the 80s and 90s he was constantly bushing the boundaries of what was acceptable on radio.
More than that, he was the first celebrity interviewer who wouldn't just kiss their asses and was willing to ask "unacceptable" questions, yet most stars still wanted to go on the show since his audience was so huge.
When he went to satellite it was a big deal because now he could finally be totally uncensored, and he had a few good years there, but it was the beginning of the end. When he was on terrestrial radio any weirdo with a $5 thrift store radio could listen and call in (which was another part of the shows charm) but now it was a subscription based service.
Around 2010 he either revealed himself as, or became, a complete pussy that was the opposite of what he always stood for. Standing on the guise of "the show has evolved" he started being a major celebrity ass kisser and sellout - basically revealing that while he had once pissed all over the table the cool kids sat at, he now desired to sit at it and break bread with them.
