But now Im older I appreciate this movie a lot more and have watched it often.

I liked it when it came out because I was 8 and it was one of the first blockbuster movies I got to pick.
Now that I've played 7 8 and 9 I can affirm my belief that it works as a (too) broad appeal Final Fantasy story.

People wanted 7 but they should have just done something like 9, make Aki Ross a warrior princess and have wizards and moogles.

It failed because it had nothing to do with the games and was a catastrophic failure when adapting FF7 could have been a giant hit considering that it was and still is regarded as a landmark game with a beloved story and characters while it's not bad but mislabeling it as a FF film soured a lot of people on what was a generic Sci-Fi flick that might have done well if given another name.

You're underestimating FF7's impact as a lot of people I knew played it because word of mouth was spreading about how great it was and I have to agree.

This is the same bullshit with the Resident Evil as they've made a bunch of spin-off CGI animated movies peripheral to the games main story line, when what we want is adaptations of the games!!!FACT!!!

The Dragon Quest series doesn't feel the need to change things. The battle system in every game is pretty much the same. And that's why people love Dragon Quest.

And you were right. Spirits Within is a fine film, but its not Final Fantasy and it put off people who wanted something like Final Fantasy.

Lord of the Rings came out only a few months later to massive boxoffice success, showing there was huge demand for fantasy films in 2001. Hindsight is 20/20 though.
