Today I learned people actually hated War of the Worlds (2005) starring Tom Cruise. I thought it was universally liked.

Family is annoying, son does stupid shit, incredibly disjointed pacing in the second half. Great visuals in general, good practical effects blended with CG, good suspense at the start, but then it really loses steam and the flaws make it frustrating to sit through. I'd give a 6.5/10. It's certainly not terrible, but god damn do the problems weigh it down and rather quickly at that.

The main criticism at the time, if it wasn't related to anti-Scientology stuff, was the ending was stupid because the aliens being taken down by bloodborn diseases didnt "make sense" because of how powerful they were. I never understood this and it is the kind of mindset that led to MCU domination - a very powerful bad guy needs an equally powerful good guy for them to get defeated.

it made some sense I guess, the aliens machinery in the movie essentially was planted on earth millions of years ago? and they grew from those seeds using earth materials, maybe they didn't expect bacteria that could kill them to evolve in that time, they thought earth would be more sterile and in their hubris were using a plan that worked on hundreds of other planets with no incident

I had a dream of war of the worlds. Where the humans slowly mixed their DNA with the Martains and became this abomination and opened up a portals to other Earths and invaded them and became these absolute abominations until the point where they became these worm like creatures that absorbed biological material into them and the last humans in one universe was hiding in caves on the moon before eventually being absorbed. It was interesting watching them in the dreams becoming less and less human and more monsterous

It would have been great if it had been about Tom Cruise trying to get to his kids in Boston, not trying to be a cuck and take his kids to his more successful ex’s place in Boston. The kids are nightmarishly annoying little cunts, and I was so pissed when it was revealed that the son had somehow survived and beaten them to Boston.

Also, the climax looked like someone just showed Spielberg a clip from the Strider battle in Half-Life 2, and they copy/pasted it.

Dakota Fanning yelling didn't help much.

I saw the movie on TV in 2007 and I thought she was loud, I can't imagine how annoying would have been for the people in film theaters

We’re talking about a schmaltzy Spielberg popcorn movie about aliens invading, dickhead. It’s clear that they wanted you to come to like those kids (or anyone, really) because the desire to see them succeed is what drives your investment in the story, and they failed at that.

I remember watching this in theaters and I remember people coming out feeling it was exhaustive to watch. 2000's era Spielberg films all had this feel of introducing new areas and characters not for the plot, but to enrich and flesh out the world. Some people hate that and just want films to get to the point.
Thankfully for them we have discordflicks that take place in bedrooms that look just like our own.

it's a good movie to see in theaters. the tripods look awesome, some great GREAT action scenes, score, sound design. spielberg knows how to make a polished movie. but the writing and most of the performances are pretty bad. the plot barely exists. you give zero fucks about the fate of any character the whole movie. running tom cruise runs, but is otherwise just doing mission impossible face most of the movie. the kids suck.

>>213432145
that's right from the book, but I kinda agree with the criticism. we take precautions against infection when we send astronauts to places we think are sterile. and the guys invading a known life-filled planet in hermetically sealed space mechs don't? it's not as dumb as "allergic to water", but it's up there.

this film got shown a lot on tv here in the uk for years and years often late night on channel 4 and it would always terrify me when i was younger and saw bits of it when it was on. so my opinion is skewed by nostalgia but i still think it's a really good film if you aren't expecting perfection

It just felt a bit dull.
Like it pulled its punches.

Plus I have the same issue with Cruise that I have with Natalie Portman. They never seem like they're doing "adult" acting. They both come off as child actors playing an adult role.
They have youthful features (most of their careers) but it's also the way they carry themselves. They don't convey "adult" in some intrinsic way.

It’s because they’re energetic. FNGs are depicted in Vietnam War movies the same way. They’re not fatigued, jaded, coldly calculating, or weathered like the seasoned vets. They’re lively, optimistic, passionate, and fresh faced.

especially since it's stupid easy to do. Foreground is the actors on a set and background is the CGI plate. These days, there has to be a thousand cuts: we gotta see the actor's face up close, then the face of the victims, then the face of the aliens, then the face of more actors far away watching the scene unfold, before finally coming back to the face of the actors.

And it was so much better. I complained about the shit CGI in MM furiousa and that it looked like a shit videogame, /tv/ coped and defended it. I checked the website that credited the developers of the CGI and they all literally had Indian names. Why would an industry that cares so much about money get worse CGI and practical effects over the past 20 years that ruin the movie? Just to save a couple bucks during production?
