i liked the new season, but i think a lot of the complaints come down to nobody really wanting to see the modern world portrayed in media. KOTH was a time capsule of a comfier time in the late 90s to mid 2000s and now it's back to remind us how fucking gay and lame everything is now.

Even seasons 11 and 12 had much better art style and animation. The issue in the reboot is they don't use thin lines in close up shots. So far away you use thicker lines but the reboot uses the same line width throughout.

The show goes out of the way to show that the kids all more or less became their parents. Joseph is a borderline criminal, Connie is a neurotic mess, and Bobby is pretty much a more easy-going Hank.

This is a scene set at night. There's zero indication that it would be, there's no cozy light lighting up the room, there's nothing hinting at this being the night apart from the character telling you that it is It is flat, bright and says nothing about anything, it's not even trying to.

I'm not "successful" by any real measure, other than making a decent salary + benefits working for the largest company in my country.

But I was a literal Bobby growing up, and my Dad was a Hank. I was about 21 when I was slapped across the face with clinical depression, and instead of becoming a fur-fag, I just put all my efforts into trying to become a "normal guy".

Now my life is completely joyless and feels like a prison sentence, but at least my Dad is proud of me. It kinda seems like that's what they're saying with Bobby here (I'm only 5 episodes into the new season) - that he still has a bit of whimsy, but has mostly just focused on making sure he Dad no longer thinks "that boy ain't right".

The original seasons did everything. The show ended right where it was supposed to. By the end, you knew every episode would have some combination of:

- Hank is a stickler
- Peggy overestimates herself
- Bobby struggles with masculinity
- Luann is naive
- Dale is sneaky
- Bill is weird
- Mr. Strickland is degenerate

Every plot point would involve something along these lines. It was never meant to be deep prose. It was literally made so people watch the Ford and McDonald's commercials around it. For that, it was a perfect easy watch.

This new season only had two options. Completely depart from the original and lose familiarity. Stick with the original and run the old concepts into the ground. It was set up to fail. Which is par for the course, artistically, in 2025.

the problem I have with it is it's effort to make it consistent with the original series while also being wildly off in a ton of aspects. Ages don't make sense. Cotton killing a German doesn't make any sense. Bill having a long term job immediately after being shown as a shut-in, but it's been a very short time since he was a hermit and it's portrayed like he's been working there for a long time.
