I've already seen it and it's the best action movie of the year. I was watching it and thinking in Superman, Fantastic Four and the other MCU bombs. You watch this movie and see the creativity of the script and fantastic action scenes. The villains have their arcs and origins. Absolute cinema

"Demon Slayer" is a shitty name because they have to localize about 50 Japanese comic book titles for every one that is a hit, so it's probably just one white guy at a desk that has to pick something over and over.

the stuff with those titles is adapted from stuff kids write on a literal fanfiction posting website called Narou that's basically the same thing as wattpad or fanfiction.net. The titles are long because they have to catch the attention of people that are scrolling through thousands of titles

this movie is from a normal commercial comic book

Kimetsu no Yaiba
Oni Slaying Blade is how I would translate it. 滅びる, horobiru, does mean "to destroy" and is the same kanii as "metsu," but the character itself isn't limited to that meaning and can also mean extinction, annihilation, perish, etc. It's the same kanji they use in Fairy Tail for dragon slayer, which is written in furigana to let you know it should be read as "dragon slayer" in Japanese, but as a kanji compound it's "dragon slaying (metsu) mage."

Oni is kind of a strange word because it can both refer to a specific monster (red or blue skin, horns, iron club, tiger skin loincloth) but is also used as a generic word for monsters in the same way we might say ghoul or goblin. In fact, goblin is also often written with furigana with the kanji for it being "small oni."

There are many different words for monsters in Japanese, youkai, oni, mamono, kaibutsu, and so forth. In the case for oni, it comes from the same Chinese character that's the generic word for ghost. The kanji that's read on its own is pronounced oni, but is read as "ki" in compounds (hence kimetsu).

So you have a word like vampire in Japanese, which is 吸血鬼, kyuuketsuki, sucking blood oni (or ghost, or monster), but Japanese people don't mentally break down their compounds into individual parts anymore than you would if you heard doghouse, so it's just the word for vampire. Likewise in games like tag the one who's it is the "oni." So it's not accurate to say it's the word for monster, but rather can be a word for monster. That's why the "oni" in Demon Slayer are so different from the archetypical ones you'd find in the story of Momotaro and the like.

Which is why it's so interesting to see how they are replacing capeshit for the younger generations. They are doing capeshit better than the country that invented it

>Why read/watch hundreds of episodes of naruto/one piece when demon slayer has actual plot progression and is 200 chapters long

I nearly threw up when I saw how many chapters and episodes One Piece has, it's a good thing that the art style is repulsive to me, because I hear the story is good but I don't think I could deal with reading or watching it for such a long amount of time without getting annoyed that it's not goign anywhere

I really appreciate when a story actually has a fucking ending these days, instead of just going on forever with what are essentially "canon filler arcs" of shit that is of barely any consequence to the overall story and just serves as a new arc to market

My only exception to this is Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, but that's because the parts feel individual enough that they each get their own ending. It's like these are individual stories with a common setting rather than one story that never reaches it's promised conclusion.

Yeah but capeshit stories in the west aren't being crafted with boys as the primary audience anymore so it's not surprising that battle shounen which is full of psychological trappings that attract young male audience goers(masculine archetypes, male rivalries & friendship, fights with a lot of spectacle, nerdy power system/level, fanservice, etc, etc) is gaining more popularity over it. I mean, the fact that supergirl is the second film coming out of james gun dcu tells you they don't see capeshit as a boys brand and nor are they the target audience.
