Its either that or how brutal(nothing compared to the game death from what I understand though) his death was. The Walking Dead had the same thing when they bashed in the the one characters head. After that episode the ratings just kept tanking despite the rest of the show being the same low quality trash it was for most seasons before it

Won't disagree, but a big part of the reason it's a shitty story is they killed off the character that was carrying to whole series, and killed him off very early on. When I watched it my wife she was like "wtf I don't even want to watch this show anymore" and I have to imagine tons of the audience felt the same way. You remove the straight dad energy charming main character and replace it with a bunch of gay and trans shit, and suddenly no one likes it anymore. Hmm, curious...

Yeah I think that's a big part of it too. It's just kind of cynical and edgy for the sake of shock value to kill him off the way they did. I think audiences have lost their appetite for that kind of stuff in a post GoT and Walking Dead world.
Which is not to say characters should have plot armor or there shouldn't be any stakes, but you have to earn it; GoT earned most of its devastating moments, TLoU and Walking Dead mostly do not

he was so extremely pitiful that people did't care about him anymore.
His character changed too much from the beginning, and this in part damaged the show.
for the rest, TLoU 2 was quite a show with poor ideas and story.
So, well, no it didn't depend from him alone.
