That's a non arguement. Phones will know far less about you when you have a phone in your house then they will about you when you carry it around in your pocket all the time. Also, it's not about being knows, I doubt someone gives a shit about what I watch or do. I'd have far more privacy with a landline. The argument is about not feeling the pressure to be available all the time outside of the physical context you are in at that moment. Be it to algorhythms or to people.

Blair Witch is a terrible example. They'd just say that they had no signal and make it ambiguous whether it's just the woods or the witch doing it. Everyone filming themselves on their phones even though they're scared out of their mind also make more sense for tiktok and selfie-obsessed zoomers wanting to emulate their paranormal "investigation" e-celebs, until the moment things really do turn real for them and they drop their phone.

If I was homeless a new phone with as good of a battery as possible would be the top of my priority. That shit is not only your lifeline in finding out which shelters are open any given night and your homeless buddies telling you they've scored a bag of free bagels or warning each other about assholes going around pouring water on people and shit like that, or filming evidence when some asshole does stuff like that, but it's also your one source of entertainment. Instead of lugging books around you read them on your phone. Instead of going to the cinema you watch movies and shows on your phone. Instead of jerking off to ladies in the park you jerk it to prettier ladies on your phone. It's the #1 tool of today's world.

Cell phones in general have ruined horror movies. Unless you’re doing a period piece, there’s no more scenes of people going to the town library to look up old newspaper clippings of the story of the miners who died in a tragic accident that might be in some way related to all the recent unsolved pickaxe murders or whatever.

But that's not the fault of cellphones? Old local newspapers aren't easily accessible on phones! That's why people still go to libraries to research local history, or help with slowly digitising their collections. The writers CHOOSE to have characters find their info online instead of having them grumble at not finding anything on google and then going down to the library and finding everything they need with the help of a librarian who knows how to find everything relevant.

The bulk of cars being homogeneous aerodynamic blobs while also shooting up in price has ruined film car variety. You use to be able do some easy character development based off what the person drove up in. Guy in a muscle car. Old farmer in rounded top truck from as few years ago vs a bit more modern 70s one (in a 70s film). etc etc.
Now? The 2010 version of a F150 isn't that different to a normal viewer than a 2020 version. You can't have a guy down on his luck roll up in a modern new car as they cost $$$$$$. Even car based films like 2F2 slop had to resort to over the top stickers etc and then reach back into the old days for cars to make it clear who is in what..
and another random issue is inflation has shit on the backpack of money sort of robbery film. Like No Country for Old men works being that suitcase is $$$$$$$. Now the same case would be why die for too little cash to even buy a used Honda?

Being able to drift off to sleep and have the book stop playing in five or ten minute intervals based on when I stop moving is so good that I simply can't use any other player. The equaliser that lets you fiddle with the audio when it's a bad copy is also great. I just got a landline put back in. It's $50 a month but when the power goes out it still works. And you can get a cassette tape answering machine even if you wanted. But you can get a digital one more easily. I've got an old rotary phone hooked up right now but they phased out pulse service so I can only receive calls on it and not call out. It's cool that ancient technology is still so durable and dependable. With no power in the county a 5 lb phone will still rattle its bell and let you talk for hours in crystal clarity. I got mine through Century Link. I think they're national.
Landlines are making a comeback. I'm going to look into dialup internet too just to mess around with it.

Yeah, old phones don't even have hackable technology. They'd have to send a guy to your house and physically bug you and install cameras and motion sensors to get what they can pull from a smartphone.
All they can do remotely is wiretap you and I think that's way, way more trouble than just doing software shit and it only gets you the phone calls.

Bleak world. If I was homeless I'd live truly free like an old rail hobo. Living on the streets and still following social media and participating in the online world would be so hellish. The ONE silver lining in homelessness is absolute freedom from responsibility and society. The last thing I'd want would to be tied to a world I was no longer a part of in some superficial, spectator way, and then on this sad little pocket size screen. Always huddling next to some building with an outlet, shivering against its cold and artificial glow instead of sitting by a campfire down by the river with the other hobos, singing sea shanties and pitching in what you have to the mulligan stew.

They were okay when you could get small ones. Now they're all either large or extra large. And the smallest one you can get is only small if it folds in half. Just ten years ago you could have little palm-sized iphones and shorter androids. Now they're all pretty much of similar dimensions. At least in the USA. You can still get phones with physical keyboards in other countries. None of them can be made to work where I live. I've checked. In fact, you have to buy a new phone like every four years at the very least. They simply become obsolete and at a certain point the carriers won't let you use them.
I fucking hate all that.
And I'd hate to be a videogame person with all the online rental membership shit they have to go through now. Everything sucks.

Yes. I went to see it opening weekend as a teenager and walked out disappointed. I didn't like it any better upon a rewatch a couple years ago either.
I like the genre, it's just a mess. And the Dolph Lundgren character was weird. Everyone just went to see it because of the laser garrotte thing from the commercials. Which was pretty cool, but not cool enough.
Those cyberpunk and evil AI/VR type movies were really hit or miss in the 90s. There were so many of them. We all watched them for the computer special effects because "graphics" were super important. The near end of the 16 bit era and Doom had come out and everyone was getting CD-Rom at home and the internet was new. Those were the good old days.
I wish I'd taken screenshots of being on BBS.
