Dexter's formula is so effortlessly perfect and entertaining that it's very difficult to mess shit up. That's why the series usually starts sucking when it tries to brute force some long story arcs with the aim of reaching a climax/conclusion. It's built for quick relief with slow but gradual plot development; not long and overly drawn out arcs.

Dexter has dealt with cannibals before, and having Prater be a cannibal isn’t super interesting.
