๐
I made a write-up about this since I have nothing better to do and the thread's dead.
Most things in Trek even if I think it's stupid or don't like or agree with it, I can at least understand the idea or intention behind it. But The Aenar is terrible and I just can't understand. WHY are Aenar? Why are they blind? Why are they telepathic? Why are they a supposedly mythical race? Why are they pacifists? Why are they white? WHY WHY WHY I don't get it so let's examine.
>Why are they telepathic?
Ok well I guess this is because the Romulans "needed" a telepath to be their drone pilot. What, are there no telepathic science experiments from races they have easy access to? Which brings me to the next thing
>Why are they a "myth"?
So if the Romulans were going to use telepaths for their program how did they get this specific guy when even Andorians wouldn't all agree that Aenar are even real in the first place? It's like if the Chinese came over to North America to hunt bigfoot for use in their black ops military experiments. Shran says he doesn't know anyone that has ever seen one. So why make that be part of their lore if it makes their inclusion in this plot even more nonsensical and stupid? They could have just been like, a known group of people? What does this add? Especially because even though they're supposedly so elusive and secretive when they go looking for them they find them IMMEDIATELY. They're fucking clomping around getting impaled on icicles like morons and one just shows up. They don't even act elusive. They're just like "oh you guys were looking for us? here I am" OR maybe the point is that Jhamel is some kind of special snowflake Aenar who actually wants to see the world so she's friendly? Also I find it hard to believe they only took ONE of them and didn't abduct a whole batch. The ship was a prototype after all there were bound to be mistakes and deaths and then you're SOL with no pilot when the ONLY one you snatched dies. Stupid.
>>213446659That female Aenar was kind of a cute though.
>>213446659>Why are they pacifists?I guess this is to add a hamfisted conflict to the plot as for the excuse why they won't help save one of their own even though the mission is to destroy a fucking drone ship and destruction of property isn't violence which Archer should have fucking explained to these stupid ayys but that's besides the point. An entire subspecies just having the same ideology is cartoonish and I really see no reason why they wouldn't just be normal Andorian citizens. Is pacifism some sort of genetic condition? I know Andorians are known as violent freaks but surely every single person isn't like that. I mean Shran was an advocate for peace and he's THE Andorian character of this show so pacifism shouldn't be so taboo that these people have to live inside of a fucking glacier wasteland with nothing but worms and by the way what's with that? I hate how Andoria is shown in this show. The whole planet is just ice? That's retarded. Do they just eat those worms? Do they eat ice?
>Why are they blind? Why are they white?Another thing that makes no sense. There isn't a single point or payoff to this detail and they even lampshade it sort of because the only time it's brought up is when Jhamel says "I've never met a blue skin before" and Shran is like "Tf you mean? You're blind." That aside how do you even know what the fuck "blue" is? Her excuse is some bullshit "Tee hee telepathy is just weird like that" HUH? Just make them not be blind??? Why did you put that?
>>213446685At first I thought that maybe this whole part of the arc was some kind of reference to some other Trek thing because the rest of it had been so far but aside from the burrowing worms that reminded me of Devil in the Dark I really can't think of how this is similar to anything. They didn't need this plot about Jhamel trying to save Gareb or whatever. They didn't need the pilot to be some new race they just made up. It could have been a Vulcan. It should have been a Vulcan. Rommies torturing and killing a Vulcan would have hit way different, especially given the previous arc reveal. It could have been T'Pol that saves the day instead of her trying it once and giving up. She's the character they love to make suffer anyway. Also it was silly how they just magically slapped together their own drone pilot setup but whatever. So yeah. What were they thinking?
>>213446681she was and her being cute and Shran loving her was literally the only good thing about this whole stupid fucking arc
>>213446621That's not an andorian

>>213446659>It's like if the Chinese came over to North America to hunt bigfoot for use in their black ops military experiments. What do you think those balloons over USA airspace were for, anon?
>>213448814as the person that came up with it, the problem with that hypothetical is that Romulans are not actually as retarded as the Chinese. the bottom line is that
>we'll poach literally one singular member of a telepathic mythical race we no less than nothing about to use in our black ops military experimentsis to fucking retarded for any trekkie to entertain at face value
>>213448804Not canon amigo
>>213448891On par with MKULTRA and The Men Who Stare At Goats, tbqdesu
>>213449017I'm sorry but no there is just no way it makes any sense. Vulcans are also telepathic it and Romulans have basically unlimited access to them (spoilers) so there is no reason for them to ever seek out some mythical race of aliens who SUPPOSEDLY have telepathic abilities (based on myth and rumor)
The Aenar is quite possibly the absolute most retarded episode of star trek ever if you take even a split second to actually think about anything that happens in it

>>213446906It's DS9 so Gene's vision of daily showers has faded. Everyone is musty in their warm ass grey fleece and Miles smells like alcohol.
>>213450172Interesting. When did it stop happening? It seems to mainly be shows from the 60s/70s that have that look from what I've seen. TNG doesn't, for example.

>>213448431no anon I'm talking about you
>>213450221data knew it was wrong and did it anyway. d
i spelled weyoun wrong before but in my defense I have had a little bit of a drink
>>213450355no you're not because i would have written this episode so much fucking better while being totally sober. coming up with some sub-race of Andorian was totally unnecessary and they soiled a race that was already awesome and strong thanks to the amazing actor(s) who portrayed them in TOS.
>>213449326vulcans and romulans are the same species though, if they wanted a weak telepath (see: vulcans and romulans) they'd just use a romulan. presumably, they needed a stronger telepath, and I guess the only ones they knew of at the time were aenars. I imagine if they knew betazed existed they'd go grab a random troi and stick her in the chair
>>213450270It stopped happening when TVs became predominantly non-CRT, e.g. LCD, and when shows were no longer shot on videotape (which is also interlaced). You can look up the history of interlaced video yourself.
>>213450437The other guy is right, itโs a huge asspull on the part of the writers. It couldโve just as easily been a Vulcan mutant with extra telesauce or whatever, but then thereโs be no reason for the Andorians to be involved. No Andorians, no Shran, and for that reason Iโm ok with it as it is, dumb as it is. Not thrilled, but ok
>>213450643you knows its over when even the borg won't assimilate you
>>213450680Without asspulls there'd be no stories at a certain point
>oh these vulcans just HAPPENED to be flying through OUR solar system on the EXACT day this dude decided to go to warp for the FIRST TIME
>>213450574I looked it up and you weren't 100% correct, really. Or well, you were only partially right.
turns out Star Trek was one of the few 60s shows actually shot like a motion picture on quality film and when other shows had the interlaced look, Trek noticably didn't back in the day.
But conforming to later "NTSC broadcast standards," they used something called "3:2 pulldown" to give it that interlaced look.
That's why it looks different on Paramount+ or Blu Ray than it does on H&I which was my original question.
>>213450735Of course, itโs nature of the thing. I hadnโt really thought about it until it was discussed here but it really does add some stupid shit to the cannon, assuming Ent counts. Silly blind Andorian telepaths seems like a pretty good reason why it shouldnโt. On the other side of the argument: Shran. We got what we got

I'm not watching with you guys but one time I accidentally dropped a ton of acid and watched the first episode. It was a life changing experience. >>213452310Bashir is also the most desperate for pussy man on this whole show. it's pure delusion.
the only reason he has a relationship with Garak at all is because he's naive and stupid and literally none of the other senior staff will give Garak the time of day because they know what he is.
>>213451809All DS9 and voyager are on film. Just they have more cgi so it would cost more than TNG (which cost $20 million and didn't make a profit).
>>213452391>TNG (which cost $20 million and didn't make a profit). That's such a horseshit excuse though because the restoration vastly increased TNG's long-term attractiveness as a commodity for streaming sites.

Strange New Worlds really has become the JJ-Trek 09 tv show. All they do is revisit old plots, remake them with flashy vfx and add no new angle to it whatsoever. I wonder if the only story ideas they work with are from one of these Star Trek plot generators. You don't even need AI for that.
TAS is really underrated
That is all
>>213459057I watched it not long ago. Maybe like a year or so. It is not very good. I remember only one feeling like an actual STAR TREK 'sode. The one were Spock goes back in time and sees his family and pretends to be a cousin.
I'M HERE TO SAY THE WORDDDDDD
>>213459844It at least isn't dull to watch.
>>213454984At least VOY and DS9 get to hide their bad CGI behind standard definition. But HD ENT can't
wondering what the average age group is here. I started watching tng in 2021 (highschool) and finished everything except nutrek earlier this year (college).
>>213460850Yeh. I'm totes young like you. started with DISCO when I was a little kid. Most /trek/ folks are the same.
>>213460850Pretty much the same age as you, my dad watched TNG with me when I was younger
>>213460943Please just die.

Found a new trek podcast and I'm now rewatching DS9 in preparation to listening.
Other trek-related stuff you're doing?
>>213461417It is a lame character drama, so yes
>>213461416Still had manual shit in the 23rd century. You youngsters don't know how lucky you have it!
>>213458925Never seen a character in such desperate need of a secret genetic enhancement in my life. Is it even possible to be more boring than Chakotay? At least that fucker doesn't talk about his medicine bundle every episode.
>>213461515Turn his head upside down and he looks more interesting.
>>213461515Hey, lay off Travis
>>213461515What can you do with him? You don't have a holodeck to give him a story. When there's planet-side action you always have Trip and T'pol that take the spotlight. Well, you could make him fly a shuttle though. That could be his story. He flies the shuttle and one time, everyone depends on him because this time, he has to fly the shuttle real good...
>>213461515>At least that fucker doesn't talk about his medicine bundle every episodeUhh...
>>213461639e flies the shutlle down to the planet he's hanging out at the shuttle waiting for archer and t'pol to get back from w/e mission and shenanigans ensue someone tries ot hijack the shuttle or soe kid runs out of the forest asking for protection or idk there are things you can do
>>213446338>tfw you realise your wife was actually less of an evil cunt when she was possessed by a Pah-Wraith
>>213461651Folks criticise Chakotay. But, you have to admit. he does have a disproportionally high amount of good Trekpus
>>213461923I just watched nemisis last night and while all those guys were acting their little hearts out the absolutely ridiculous speech patterns just makes it too goofy, kudos to them for keeping a straight face and delivering the lines seriously and even convincingly but it still sounds so stupid it completely undercuts the serious tone they are going for
>>213461923Chakotay criticism is out of date anyway. He's one of Trek's genuine redemption stories.
Why did she try to cunnytrap her own husband?
>>213446621i wanna see your bussy
>>213462041My brain always erases the knowledge that Tom Hardy played a Trek villain until Nemesis is mentioned
>>213462089I meant the episode, this one
>>213461923
>>213462041I like it. Weird and archaic and stilted. Their language. It reminds me of Inglorious Basterds. In the film-within-a-film bit, sniping from eth clock tower. And the 'American' soldier says something like: 'general, I implore you. We must take this tower'. And it's clearly like a script written by an ESL German. That's what Nemesis is. Some weirdly translated old propaganda program.
>>213454673There are plenty of counterexamples. The way Starfleet was willing to uproot the Native Americans in the "Journey's End" episode was just one of many.
>>213457065A lot of commercials for hemorrhoid cream, baldness pills, life insurance, and Viagra. Even DS9's advertisers know their target audience is old geezers.
>>213457065I've got the discs now & don't have the discipline but I believe in all of you.
>>213462064You've never interacted with 12-year-old girls, have you. Either that, or maybe you're really, really unattractive.
>>213462271I do like the theory its an old program that hasn't been updated I guess, still sounds stupid
>>213462490In what context would a grown man be interacting with 12 year old girls? I don't have a little sister or female cousins, so I would never be around their friend groups either
>>213462041>>213462271It's a classic case of the actors taking the script seriously instead of winking and mugging to the camera. Sincerity is what sells it, it's how old sci-fi can be kino despite an obvious set with a budget of $5, when slop costing 10s or 100s of millions is still utterly shit.
>unambiguously evil trans-dimensional species that can skinwalk as the people they kill, read minds, and want to break into our reality and kill everyone and everything, also displays cognito-hazard properties.
>additionally, there is a prison with thousand of these little fuckers trapped on a random planet somewhere
>never mentioned in any lore or in any of the other series that take place later in the timeline
I'm starting to believe that the writers aren't just stupid, but they also have naked contempt for the Star Trek series as a whole.
>and it was your mistake to think that badge was real, constable
>213462416
mostly shriners, aspca, st. jude, wounded warrior project, and easter seals. You're the nutrek spammer though so I won't give you a (you), much less money.
>>213462674Bro there's an entire arc in Lower Decks based entirely on making fun of the fact the old shows are full of important events and meetings that were never spoken of again

>>213463077Gary "Sue" Seven.
>>213462159>>213463077always find it a shame this never got made, I can see it working
>>213462809>Bro there's an entire arc in Lower Decks based entirely on making fun of the fact the old shows are full of important events and meetings that were never spoken of again
>>213462159Episode 226, "Assignment: Earth". Teri Garr was a major hottie back in those days.
>>213463278And I think that's a valid critique. No one ever went back to check whether Landru had taken over again after Kirk left. No one went back to the drug-addicted planet after Picard separated them. And so on.
>>213463348that's not a critique
>>213463205As its own thing it was fun to watch and I probably would have watched a series about him. As a Star Trek episode, it was shameless and treated Kirk and Spock terribly.
>>213463150>immune to the Vulcan nerve pinch>has a James Bond pen that hypnotizes people and destroys force fields>"a cat is fine too">genetic perfection molded by 6000 years of research>owns a transporter, replicator, and automatic typewriter>qt retard, that's secretly high IQ and has a star-shaped birthmark on her ass, assistantPresumably he had a 12 inch dick too.
>>213463300In some scenes she was downright adorable, while in others it felt like she hadn't quite gotten the character down yet. I think if Seven had gotten even just a season she would have improved a lot.
>>213463348Space is big. Not everything needs a follow-up.

>>213454985the whole episode is kino. i've watched it like 20 times. one of my favorite moments is when Gav says
>VULCAN I WOULD SPEAK TO YOUand Sarek has his back turned to him and kinda smirks and says
>It does seem unavoidable. He's such a good Vulcan
>>213463505It does if the Enterprise goes out of their way to intervene in someone other planet's situation. Ornara/Brekka weren't even warp capable, making Picard's intervention even more indefensible. Then he just leaves them be. As their mural shows, that didn't work out so well for them. So yes, follow-ups are necessary.
>>213463505The flagship of Starfleet isn't supposed to stay put in their ongoing mission. They leave everything for the rest of the fleet to mop up. I don't get why that isn't simple for people to understand?
>As this Family Guy cutaway gag shows,
>>213463348That's what the LOW 'sode is about. How the flagship Enterprise goes around a makes first contact. And they're the rinky-dink low tier ship that makes like fourth contact. Check ups, sees how the planets doing
>>213463753Which is why ships like the Cerritos are tasked with such jobs. At least, after Captain Freeman sold Starfleet on the idea.
>>213462674It was just a badly written, messy and unfocused episode. And the engineer woman is starting to get on my nerves with her hysterics.
I don't think the writers are capable of writing actual science fiction. They just want to do a relationship drama show with pew pew laser fights and random technobabble thrown in.
>>213462089Tom Hardy tries to as well
>>213463952Which is too bad because he gives a good performance against Pstew
>SISKO: Is there anything I can get for you?
>DUKAT: A bottle of kanar and an Orion slave girl would be nice.
>SISKO: I'll see what I can do.
Imagine Sisko comes back with pic related.
Dukat would revert back into crying in the fetal position lmaoooo
Just watched "Juggernaut" from Voyager. That was a pretty kino B'Elanna episode. I liked the shot of her facing the Malon amidst all the gas

Live-posting the latest episode of Star Trek Strange New Worlds!
The landing party is inside of an ancient temple. There's a race called the M'Kroons. Can't transport inside the temple. Tensions between Spock and Chapel seem to be the central story element. The new medical guy just got blinded by a space ball. Rest in shit haters.
>>213465928And a crazy laser just killed the native guy and sealed the door shut. Will check in as it goes.
>>213465989As a bit of backstory the race that built the temple are dead and believed they had unlocked the secret to immortality, which involved keeping the body's molecules in a state of quantum uncertainty or something like that.
>>213466137The medical guy who got blinded now his brain shows he isn't alive. Connected to the immortality race perhaps.
>aaaaa I can't stop shitting my pants because the HATERS are persecuting me on an anonymous image board!!!!
>>213460327Needs a Sealab 2021 esque remake tbqh sampai
>>213461639>just pretend heโs oversized cargo, itโs fine, no pressure, youโve done this before. Just like on the freighter
>>213466240Now medical guy and Pikes girlfriend got possessed and got into a fight somehow.
The Gorn are somehow genetically engineered to fight the evil alien ghosts. Calling it.
>>213466379What about his cutie reporter gf?
>>213466446Depends if thereโs room on the freighter I guess. Priorities
>>213466385It turns out it's not a space temple it's an immortality space prison. Now we just need to get the landing party out of there and get an exorcist for Gamble.
>>213466437She did seem to speak their language.
>>213466499Maybe the NuGorn are possessed and this ties in to make the Gorn calmer.
>>213466471Now they're going to walk on air because of reverse causality. Science!
>>213466628Nah I think it was just a lazy excuse for a fight scene. Maybe some of the prisoners are evil Gorn?
>>213466638Scotty for the win! Recapturing the escaped space ghost inside the damaged prison cell then beaming it to nowhere. Ghost prisons everybody. How fun. Overall I give this episode a 6/10. Kind of derivative of former SNW storylines. Not as good as other episodes this season. But overall not bad either. The time flew by. Thanks for letting me ruin your thread for an hour. Fags.
>>213466748Oh wow I figured they'd use space science to save Ensign Gamble but nope they killed him off. Nobody's safe. I like the little speech about evil at the end.
>>213466796This was punishment for the nuTrek haters and the way they just jump down your throat if you even mention it casually. They are deranged. May they rest in shit forever in a space prison. Why did the computer glitch like that at the end? Later fags.
>SNW episode 5
FINALLY an actually good fucking Star Trek episode.
unironically couldn't help but think this episode would be directly improved if this exact script had all been acted out by the OG TOS cast
>>213466748I think it was the strongest ep this season.
>>213466839>Why did the computer glitch like that at the end?Because the ghost in the transporter buffer can not only possess people but also the computer.
>>213468095So it's every ST alien possession cliche rolled into one
