The Babylon project was our last.. BEST hope for peace. A self-contained world, five miles long, located in neutral territory. A place of commerce and diplomacy for a quarter of a million humans and aliens. A shining beacon in space. All alone in the night..
It was the dawn of the third age of Mankind, the year the great war came upon us all. This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2259. The name of the place.. is
Babylon 5.
What happened to the first 4 babylons
Humans and aliens wrapped in 2,500,000 tons of spinning metal, all alone in the night.

I never understood how there was such a thriving prolific underworld on the station replete with unmonitored lawless slums. There's not infinite space and it'd cost 5-10x more to live on a space station than it would on a planet because of the extra cost involved moving water and food and housing restrictions and necessary tax for maintenance. Eventually these criminals and drug addicts would be tearing the ship apart from the inside to sell the pieces for scrap.
Like did no one ever sit down and say "hey, this space station we built for trade and diplomacy to be a showcase for the galaxy is slowly filling up with an impoverished troublesome underclass that's taking up our extremely limited space, for their own good lets clear out these rats and set up more monitoring in less secure parts of the station so all these crazy fucking murders and terrorist attacks stop happening?"
At least in DS9 the lawlessness can be chalked up to the crew having inherited a station which was an old mining processor and they're in the process of refitting it. Like who the fuck approved the B5 plans with very obvious isolated sectors that would have not so much as a security camera put up in them? Why the fuck is everyone okay with little unwatched civilians have access to pathways which lead to every sensitive part of the station?

Centauri were getting pushed in. They were giving other races an inch and everyone was taking a mile especially the Narn. Little wonder they turned to the Shadows.
Once Londo figured out what he got himself into he tried to back away and minimize the damage but by then it was too late so he did what he could to at least steer things towards the least destructive path.
Some of the things that Londo did were monstrous yes, but it was a means to deal with even bigger monsters. Everything he did was in the best interest of the Republic.

>>213463120>homovegan alienslel
>>213463027Ego. No seriously, too many actors & writers & producers think they're too good for this stuff, whether because of the genre("silly space stuff") or the format("it's just not *cinema* is it darling"). When syndicated episodic television was still the baseline economic model for TV they didn't have a choice, even the egofaggots eventually had to bitterly accept that they weren't talented enough/well enough connected to the Tribe to make it in films, at least from the beginning, so they took the work they could get and made the best of it.
Now though, now we have "prestige TV", streaming movies, even videogames if you can muster up a little name recognition or are happy enough doing VA work, and the economic model of TV has been completely wrecked. Even if someone wanted to make a decent episodic sci-fi drama, they'd have no way to force all the 2good4u shitheads in Hollywood to participate.
>>213462911He was a bad guy who was capable of realising when he'd went too far, and tried to make amends
>>213463011it's sinclair's human dna popping up.
>>213463027Lack of talent and will mostly from actors, writers and directors. Up till the early 2000's you could pull relative no names from theatre who would give great performances and were generally big scifi nerds themselves so they enjoyed doing it. Writers are frankly one giant circlejerk these days with no life experience to draw on so they just reference older things and themselves. Directors were always a bunch of divas but back in the day they had to be far more creative with the limited resources they had so things tended to become more of a passion project.
Cost is another one as inflation has basically wiped out the ability to produce things on the cheap. Stargate famously used to film a lot of their scenes up in Canada because when you converted US dollars into Canadian it stretched the budget so much more. Round about 2008 that stopped being as viable since the exchange rates weren't as steep.
Popularity is also a major point cause due to the amount of streaming services and channels pumping out slop its really hard for them to find an audience these days. Think of how good The Expanse was for example yet how few fags heard of it?

>>213460390Brown was the dirty mechanical zone and probably had excess space in case expansions were needed for various purposes. People came to the station, ran out of money, and didn't have funds to leave. So they got stuck, needed somewhere to stay and found that in Brown sector there were places station personnel didn't look regularly. Once that destitute population existed, criminality popped up from within and from the outside to exploit them. Some of the legit population of the station also had elicit desires, which the criminals in Brown were happy to supply. At that point it wasn't just a matter of station security looking into every nook and cranny in Brown on a regular basis to keep the homeless out, there was a big financial incentive for the criminals to protect their turf, be that through bribes, evasion, or violence.
Ideally it would only be used by station personnel for its official uses but it was more resource efficient to let Brown Sector fester as long as its impact was mostly contained to Brown.

>>213466450Design inertia likely would take time to overcome. Everything about station design and construction was streamlined for rotating cylinders. Even if they didn't rotate any more, the design would be similar for a while until engineers and architects became accustomed to possibilities permitted by artificial gravity.
Many of the first steel bridges were built like wood bridges, only stronger and less likely to rot. It took time for bridge designers to make use of the attributes of steel to come up with new designs. More recently, the switch to LEDs in vehicle headlights initially gave us designs very similar to halogen bulbs but now are diverting away from those old design patterns.

You guys didn't understand the show. One of the main themes, arguably THE main theme, is incredibly, simple, but also apparently just not understood by most people, and looking at modern world politics it seems most of the world doesn't understand it, and I'd say not understanding it is one of the root causes of a majority of horrible war crimes throughout all of human history.
There are ALWAYS good innocent people on both sides. All of this childish us vs them eye for an eye crap just means that those innocent people get hurt over and over again in cycles forever. We want to believe that war is simple and everyone on the enemy side supports the bad guys and deserves what they get but we only want to believe that because it's easy and we're afraid of accepting how complicated the world really is.

>>213461854>DS9 is pretty much a military base.It was an ore processing facility that used slave labor.
>>213462121>Who is best girl of the show? One of Lono's wives.
>>213467208california use to be a republican state, all old boomers/gen-xers in california are republicans.
>>213462121Its obviously either Delen or Lyta. Lyta really just badly needed a hug for the entire series
>>213475374Green hands typed this post. The actual answer is both the Narn and the Centauri deserved it. Both of them wanted to kill each other in the show's early seasons, and G'kar was an unironic villain up until the point his warmongering attitudes resulted in Londo being forced to hand his race their collective ass. In fact, broadly speaking, every race deserved everything bad that happened to them. The Vorlons and Shadows most especially, but Minbari and Humans as well. Babylon Five has good 'individuals' but even these individuals are actually bad people in certain circumstances.
>>213470307>being a rivalry between the showsThere really wasn't, and what there was was mostly at the studio level.
The actual writers and cast never had a problem with eachother, and it was a rotating door for character actors for hire.
And hell, Andreas Katsulas was a memorable guest star in two incarnations of the show (Tomalok in next gen, and the guy archer bonds with while trip is trying to uplift the retarded third gender person he just met).
>>213469501More like 80s, but cell phones were basically same shit forever until they switched to digital.
>>213469861Makes sense.
>>213470037They were both degens and the network needed to step in to curb their faggotry.
The distant future and the interrogation were the best episodes.
>>213475374>Heroes on BOTH sides? >What?>Can evil robots be considered Heroes?
>>213478369Are any of them left? My parents moved from California to South Carolina about a decade ago and they weren't the first from their church to do it.
>>213478421I see it at the fan level but much of that's probably attention whoring by people with nothing to contribute to the thread so they toss in the "other show was better" bomb to stir up shit.
We were lucky in the 90s with all the sci-fi kino we had. Been rewatching some of the lesser known ones again recently. Dark Skies and Space: Above and Beyond deserved much more than a single season. They're great candidates for reboots too, but something like Dark Skies would never be allowed today.
>>213479868I thought you meant between the shows themselves.
>>213480136>Space: Above and Beyond>enemy is the Chiggersshows that couldn't be made today
>>213480136SAAB was great, still livid that they binned it
>>213481864Loved her, watched the first Final Destination recently.
>>213478424>cell phones were basically same shit forever until they switched to digitalNah, you went from a duffel bag full of car batteries to make a hard to hear call for five minutes to the zack morris hand brick, to the motorolla flip phone. My dad had one, and we were going through some old shit in his attic a few years ago and found it in the bottom of a box and we laughed at how far phones have come since then.
Didn't even have an LED screen for the numbers, just a bunch of individual diodes that lit up in the shape of a number.
That was the 80's through the 90's. Phones took off in the late 90's but even then it was still an analog signal. I don't think it went to a digital signal until g3.
I would have watched B5 by now but I had such a shitty encounter with JMS I won't support his work.
