I never particularly liked him but I'm pretty much a pleb when it comes to judging or appreciating the quality of acting. I can differentiate between extremely bad acting and the rest, but for the life of me, I cannot differentiate between decent-ish and extremely good acting. Time may as well have put Nicolas Cage on the cover with the same headline and I would not have a way of arguing against it.

The vast majority of people can’t tell the difference between good and bad acting so don’t feel bad

imo, I think a really talented actor is someone who can effortlessly convince the viewers that they're watching the character and not the actor. When I watch Godfather I don't see Marlon Brando, I see Don Corleone.

How could someone who has to brainwash themselves for years to to get into character be a better actor than Brando, a guy who doesn't even bother to learn his lines and still has more oscar nominations?

But that happens to me pretty quickly if the actor is even half-decent.

definitely one of them. he's extraordinarily talented, especially in comparison to actors born post 1990.

Just good ol' Jimmy and his antics. Remember, this is from November, 2012.

This is probably the most succinct summary of what a "good" actor is. Authenticity is the key. Similarly to other branches of art being a great technician could be genuinely admirable, but it doesn't necessarily mean you can provoke and convey emotions to the audience.

That's why at no point in history anyone took acting as a serious profession until jews told them to. Because it's not hard and everyone does it every day.

I think it was just the lul of good films that came out in the 2000s, he was working in a time when films were pretty bad and only seemed good in comparison. His acting looking back is kind of goofy

I get where you are coming from with that.. All of the other "great" actors (Pacino, De Niro, Nicholson, for example) have been in tons and tons of shitty films just for the paycheck, and it dilutes their status a bit. Daniel Day Lewis doesn't do things that way, if it isn't pure kino he won't have anything to do with it. That selectiveness is a big part of his reputation, as much as his actual acting ability.
