Nah there was a huge stigma around Vietnam vets being psychos, druggies and baby killers, and there was no jingoist yellow ribbon support our troops propaganda on the talmudvision back then.

Brian Denehey in this movie is so awesome. It takes a high level of acting skill to play a convincing asshole.

>I see you're a member of our armed forces
>As a veteran myself, let me be the first to say; thanks for your service
>I'm glad you helped prevent the spread of communism over there
>Listen, some of the guys are getting together at the V.A. hall later on for a barbecue

They literally came back crying about mental trauma after having to walk one day through the jungle, turned into deranged alcoholics and asked for welfare.
Meanwhile their dads went through WW2 and never even mentioned it.

WW2 vets typically experienced 40 days of combat and then got rotated so they can get breaks in between the war. Vietnam vets had to do 240 days a year.

In the book the sheriff was the good guy. He was a Korean war vet that hated the pansy ass Vietnam vets that used war as an excuse to be losers. Not to mention he was just a basic Marine back in the day and he still outsmarted and beat Rambo, who I might add was supposed to be a badass Green Beret still in his prime.
