On second thought, I don't think it's the romance that bothers me. It's the obnoxious music inserted to tell you :"this is a romance scene!!!!" as if it isn't
obvious and the music itself just sounds shit. I think that's what makes it jarring to me. Tonal shifts can happen in shows, plenty of comedies have serious or sad or romantic moments that work, it just seems that Koreans are sometimes bad at doing it with serious/dark material and then adding romance.
