Thread for the discussion of arthouse and classic cinema.
Shoulder rub edition
>Review of the dayThe Horse Soldiers is the disaster of the month, an eventful canter in which director Ford, without any plot to speak of, falls back on boyish Irish playfulness (played by a rigor-mortified John Wayne, an almost non-existent Bill Holden, and a new gnashing beauty named Connie Towers) to fill a several-million-dollar investment. The โcomedyโ which includes Wayneโs troubles with a drunken top sergeant, a soldiering doctor, and a captive Southern belle, is interspersed with Fordโs stolidly evolved, beefy, Bonheur-ish โpictures.โ It all takes place on a plodding journey, which sends 1,700 hundred Union cavalrymen into the Confederacy in search of what turns out to be a screenplay.โ -Emanuel Farber

Wiazemsky posting used to be a funny in-joke with Bresson fans, now it has morphed into an outlet for weirdos to make disgusting and violent posts about women. Sort of how like "saar"posting attracted actual Indians into posting en masse on 4chan. "Poe's Law", right? Well I would like to say that I was merely joking about the Anne owes sex posting and I'm saying it has gone too far and I distance myself from Wiazemsky hate posting. I wash my hands of it and I apologise to Anne for making crude jokes which made misogynist posters feel emboldened to make horrible remarks towards you. Breedy Bobby was not owed sex.

I want to grab him by the collar and make him say it's better than The Exorcist: Believer.

Actual paid and published film reviewer here. I've been paid to do it since 2006 and post here frequently. Just a bit of advice: Stop acting like you just got a thesaurus for your birthday. It is a clear tell that you have no idea what you are doing to people that know what they are doing, and it alienates the average person that might be reading your reviews. Knowing the definition of a lesser used word is great, shoehorning it into a conversation because you saw it on your word of the day calendar and thinking it makes you look smart only serves to make you look like a retard to actual smart people and makes the average person not care what you have to say.
>>213490187>Actual paid and published film reviewer here.Damn, what a miserable life lmao
>>213490187You sound like a fag and your shit's all retarded.

Actual paid and published goyslop shoveler here. I've been paid to make people's opinions worse and ruin the potential of the human brain since 2006. You may have read many of my articles, they contain phrases like, "...And it's everything", "...And that's a good thing", and, my favourite, "...And uhhhh, this is kind of problematic?" Just a bit of advice: stop using big boy words because they make me feel a no-no way.
>>213490211How so?
>>213490225I love that film. Judge is very underrated when it comes to his social commentary and actually spreading it out on all sides. Something the South Park creators could strive for again, and remember they once had for the first years of their career. I kneel to no political party or politician, and things like earlier SNL, late night TV, and South Park were the same. They just called a retard a retard, even if it was at times a bit skewed one way or the other it never went full tilt and alienated large chunks of the audience. I suppose the average person was a bit less direction brained and didn't think they had to die for a side of some imaginary culture war too, but which was the cause and which was the effect? Something to think about.
>>213490353I'm not one of those people and I never will be. I'm quite a bit too old and have enough money that I don't need to go that route of what is currently considered journalism.
People who have 6000 movies watched and try to act smug are mentally ill. There aren't even 300 great movies. As long as you watch and rewatch those 299 great movies you aren't missing out on anything.
>>213490564A movie doesn't have to be 5/5 to be enjoyable. Hell, I'd say some 2/5 movies are still enjoyable.
>>213490624Normally you rewatch the movies that are most enjoyable to you. I don't remember ever rewatching a movie that I thought was just kinda enjoyable.
>>213490664I seldom do that. I'm never going to run out of movies to watch. I'd rather run in the woods than on a treadmill.

>>213494665Quentin genuinely thinks that he became black from all his momโs boyfriends being black and that heโs allowed to say it so heโs not being racist.
>>213494640random episodes are fine but if you intend on watching several it is worth noting the earlier films are the better ones. also the age gap of the later episodes ruin the adventurous spirit that tora-san possesses ought to possess being the salesman he is and doing the things he has a reputation for doing. the actor who plays the uncle died early on and so we get 3 uncles in total with the final one coming in at around episode 7 maybe. a real shame because it also impacts the enjoyment of the series.
>>213494640there's very little continuity between episodes beside a few characters showing up here and there with references of their time with tora-san and or the family. there may be references to things that happened, not necessarily involving those people. the main cast growing old and performing together can also be considered a continuation of the previous films. but generally, overall, very little continuity.

>>213496865there is goodness is your approach of accepting criticism regarding the process of your chart-making. i found that your chart, the scanadavian one, was lacking detail. specifically, the amount of director names should have been replaced by well-received film(s) of those directors. the names of directors, and just their names, leave much to be desired.

>>213497198>>213497236the only way for your arguement to make sense is to cut out the context of my statement of which inclues >was lacking detail >specifically >the amount of director names
no where does it imply what you're suggesting, but rather, on the contrary, that there were things other than director names on the list. for example, a list of films. my suggestions are as follows, if you must add director names have them positioned in their own set of squares, for instance, toward the bottom; and, avoid listing director names by using the films you think the director ought to be recognized by.

lowkey has some esoteric vibes but I can't dig deep at them. The wake of the New and the end of the Old, the patricidal intent. Tess Millay, she's a mirror, a stand-in for the late wife of Dunson and therefore as the stepmother of Matthew. Great performances specially Wayne as a greedy and aged tyrant. The camera usage was impressive during the cattle drive across the Red River, mandatory epic music to sauce up the scene. The nightfog scene was very chilling and dreamlike. The ending was a phony anticlimactic cope out though I was laughing my ass off at it. Good film altogether.

>>213500463), and I've already said I'll swap one of them out for Mother. those two films are what I call "filler films" anyway, ie. films that I'm hesitant about adding, but they end up on the chart because I need a couple more to round it out evenly

>>213501444I have one friend who pretty much only ever suggests Japanese films which are about a 75/25 good to slop ratio. My other friend wants to watch shitty 2000's comedies most of the time but will occasionally pick some enjoyable slop like Shooter (2007) which is one of my favorite guilty pleasure joints.
The last movie I made them watch was Diva (1981).
im going to ask anons for their knowledge on movies depicting gentlemen duels like the one shown in barry lyndon. the reason i ask is because jezebel 1938 talks about one but isn't good enough for the audience to show it occur.

please dont list westerns as a response to a search for gentlemen duels it isn't appropriate
>>213501594Far from gentlemen, but maybe Revenge (1964) could strike your fancy if you're feeling brutish.
If i had a glove i'd slap you on the face with it right now, Dingo.
please dont interject with samurai films no matter how great the recommendation may be just to respond to a search for gentlemen deuls it isn't appropriate
>>213501794Agreed. It was hardly a gentlemanly milieu.
I have to agree with Dingo here, you guys are not giving him what he specifically asked for.

may it please the thread and the anons whom took it upon themselves to enter into cause recommendations that include gentlemen's duels. the following are a list that seem appropriate for the requirements set forth and to my liking, the duelists, the merry widow, and liebelei. i had already the fortune of having madamae earings, monte cristo, and colonel blimp in my library. it has not gone unnoticed the mentions of love and death, which looks like trash, and revenge, which is not gentlemenly but perhaps one of the best samurai or shall we say anti-samurai films to present itself in the world of cinema to date. the anons who replied are as follows

I feel like there's a general consensus for what qualifies as arthouse, but I was wondering, what passes for an "avant-garde" or "experimental" film?
My question really is, should the term "experimental cinema" be used exclusively for radical, non-representational stuff - or do you think it's fair to call someone like Bresson or even an experimental filmmaker?
someone like Bresson an experimental filmmaker* FUCK
